The sport of track and field depends on dedicated officials to conduct its competitions. Apart from competing as an athlete or serving as a coach, there’s no better way to be involved with the sport than serving as an official. Officials not only have the best spots to see some of America's greatest athletes, they’re a vital part of every track and field meet.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements.
- Ensure the SAFETY of the athletes, coaches, spectators, and other officials. (E)
- Ensure every event is conducted FAIRLY, by the rules and procedures that govern the meet, and that no athlete has an unfair advantage or is at an unfair disadvantage so that every athlete has the opportunity to compete to the best of their ability. (E)
- Conduct the competition in a fair, safe and professional manner which gives each athlete the opportunity to perform their best. (E)
- Be athlete centered. It is about the athletes. They are the reason for having a meet__-not the officials or spectators. (E)
- Be proactive. Take steps to solve problems early and avoid having to make a call. (E)
- Be consistent. Treat all competitors and events equally. (E)
E = Essential Functions
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A track and field background is not required. While many of our officials are former athletes or coaches, many others are simply fans of track and field or participate out of a desire to officiate. Training will be provided for those without previous track and field experience and to ensure all officials are clear on the rules and safety requirements of the competition.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Maintain impartiality in every situation and every event.
- See every meet and event as important.
- Always consult the rulebook to verify non-routine rulings. Don’t be afraid to ask or check.
- Be understanding of athletes' needs and circumstances– be present, but not highly visible.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
All officials will be expected to support a schedule of meets throughout the spring sports season – the majority of meets will take place on Thursday afternoons, with the possibility of the occasional alternate day of the week based on scheduling.
