Basic Function:
Promote health and safety within the university by assisting with compliance of occupational health and safety requirements. Design and deliver programs to protect employees from work place hazards and assist departments with ensuring safety and health standards. Reports to Director, Environmental Health and Safety.

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Assist departments with the responsibility of providing safe work environments. Provide consultation and assessment of work environments to control and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, biological or ergonomic factors.
Coordinate scheduling of health and safety training. Maintain OSHA written programs. Conduct audits, assessments and create safety training programs, conduct facilitator led training and maintain programs in computer based training system. Programs include: Personal Protective Equipment, Respiratory Protection, Hazard Communications, Blood borne Pathogen, Occupational Noise Exposure, Emergency Evacuation Plans, Control of Hazardous Energy, and Fall Protection.
Conduct safety and health inspections and audits of work areas including but not limited to: University Facilities Management, Residence Services, Kent Student Center, Transportation Services, Regional Campuses, University Dining Services, laboratories, and art studios. Review findings and proposed recommendations. Prepare and submit necessary reports. Conduct research into current safety requirements and make appropriate recommendations to departments throughout the University.
Function as a self-motivated team member capable of working with minor supervision.
Investigate employee incidents and make recommendations to departments to reduce the risk of reoccurrence. Respond to other emergencies as required.
Enforce adherence to laws, regulations and university policies and procedures regarding occupational health and safety.
Attend seminars and/or training programs necessary to keep current on OHSA regulations and health/safety industry standards.
Investigate indoor air quality complaints.
Conduct ergonomic assessments and provide recommendations of corrective actions.
Assist departments in the preparation of emergency response to fires, tornadoes, and violence in the workplace.
Create programs/guidelines and provide assistance and input in order to update and revise the University’s Safety Manual.
Build strong relationships within and outside the university to facilitate collaborative functions.
Provide functional guidance of administrative/professional employees and/or direct supervision of support staff on an ongoing basis. May provide ongoing facilitation of consecutive projects.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, or closely related field and four years of related experience.
OR
Graduate level coursework in environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, or closely related field and four years of related experience.
License/Certification:
Preferred professional certification (e.g. OHST, CSP, CIH, OHST). Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable with the university’s insurance carrier.
Knowledge Of:
Standards, regulations, and recommendations of Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Protection Agency, and the American National Standards Institute
Personal computer applications: word processing, databases and spreadsheets
Skill In:
Written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Ability To:
Maintain intranet learning management system and records management
Conduct training sessions to all levels of the University
Keep detailed records
Manage projects and direct the work of others
Work with others cooperatively and effectively
Respond to after hour emergency and non-emergency situations

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
Position requires work outside and inside including environments such as confined spaces, workshops, research laboratories. May be exposed to noise, extreme temperatures, and a variety of physical conditions (ladders/high places, moving mechanical parts/vehicles, chemicals) and atmospheric conditions (fumes, dust, gases). Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and campus to campus routinely.
