Kentro is hiring for a GIS Database Engineer (DBE) to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will provide technical expertise in database design, development, implementation, and management, focusing on information storage and retrieval, data flow, and analysis. This role involves developing relational and object-oriented databases, database parsers, and database loading software. The GIS Database Engineer will work at the forefront of the system lifecycle, from requirements gathering through system acceptance testing and Initial Operational Capability (IOC).
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and implement relational and object-oriented databases to support GIS applications.
- Provide technical expertise for database design, development, implementation, information storage and retrieval, data flow, and analysis.
- Develop relational and/or Object-Oriented databases, database parser software, and database loading software.
- Project long-range requirements for database administration and design. Responsible for developing a database structure that fits into the overall architecture of the system under development and has to make trades among data volumes, number of users, logical and physical distribution, response times, retention rules, security, and domain controls.
- Work primarily at the front end of the lifecycle-requirements through system acceptance testing and Initial Operational Capability (IOC).
- Develop requirements from a project’s inception to its conclusion for a particular business and IT subject matter area (i.e., simple to complex systems).
- Assist with recommendations for and analysis and evaluation of systems improvements, optimization, development, and/or maintenance efforts.
- Translate a set of requirements and data into a usable document by creating or recreating ad hoc queries, scripts, and macros; updates existing queries, creates new ones to manipulate data into a master file; and builds complex systems using queries, tables, Open Database Connectivity, and database storage and retrieval using Cloud methodologies.
Location: On-site in Springfield, VA
- 8-10 relevant years of experience in a related field
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Database Management, or a related field.
- Experience in designing, developing, and implementing relational and/or object-oriented databases.
- Knowledge of database structure, performance optimization, security, and storage solutions.
- Strong experience with database management systems (DBMS) such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or similar.
- Familiarity with GIS software and tools (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Experience in developing database parser and loading software.
- Ability to integrate database structures within overall system architecture.
- Experience with database storage and retrieval using cloud methodologies.
- Proficiency in creating queries, scripts, and macros to manipulate data (e.g., SQL, NoSQL, Python, etc.)
- Ability to define and refine database requirements from inception to deployment.
- Experience in front-end lifecycle stages, including requirements gathering, testing, and system acceptance..
Preferred Skills:
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science, GIS, or a related field.
- Advanced knowledge of object-oriented programming languages (e.g., Python, Java).
- Experience with database parser and loading software development.
- Familiarity with data security practices and data retention policies.
- Knowledge of system architecture and design principles.
- Experience in evaluating and recommending system improvements and optimizations.
- Certification in relevant technologies (e.g., AWS Certified Database - Specialty, ESRI Technical Certification).
Clearance requirement:
- Must possess active TS/SCI with a willingness to take CI Poly
