The Kentucky State Police Facilities Security Special Law Enforcement Officer (SLEO) has an important role in one of the most elite state police agencies in the United States. Facilities Security Officers are dedicated team members providing a vital link between the safety and security of state property in Frankfort, KY. and the government agencies and visitors that occupy them. Often, Facilities Security Officers are the first line of defense in deterring potential criminal behavior as they secure the entrances to state office buildings.
A minimum of 80 hours of training, approved by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, is provided prior to becoming a sworn SLEO. A Comprehensive Field Training Program begins upon the completion of the SLEO Academy and commissioning process. During this time new Officers are taught the foundation of the KSP Facilities Security Section; SLEO duties and responsibilities, how to operate camera systems and metal detectors, familiarity of building assignments, among other skills.
Facilities Security Officers are paid and receive benefits from day one of employment. All equipment and agency clothing are issued.

Education: High School Graduate
Must have a valid driver’s license
Must be 21 years of age prior to being commissioned as a Facilities Security Special Law Enforcement Officer.
Special Requirements:
KRS 61.906 and KRS 16.040 requires that all persons commissioned as a Special Law Enforcement Officers shall be:
- A citizen of the United States
- Of good moral character and in good health.
- Not less than twenty-one (21) years of age.
- Possess a valid driver’s license against which no more than six (6) driver demerit points have been assessed. You must submit a copy of a valid driver’s license at the time of application.
- At the time of application, possess a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
- Capable of meeting the requirements to receive a Special Law Enforcement Officer (SLEO) commission under KRS 61.900 – 61.930. KSP Facilities Security Officers must complete initial firearms training and maintain yearly firearms qualifications, must be able to successfully complete and maintain CPR, First Aid and AED certification according to the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross requirements, and must be able to maintain their SLEO commission as a condition of employment with the Kentucky State Police.
