JOB SUMMARY:
The Kentucky State University School of Criminal Justice is experiencing rapid enrollment growth and program innovation. We are currently seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to join our Criminal Justice Department as an Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will contribute to our academic community through teaching across the criminal justice curriculum, grant writing and research, and service activities. This position offers an exciting opportunity for the applicant to establish a program of research in their area, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of criminal justice. Experience in criminology, law enforcement, corrections, forensic science, or other related areas is desired, but candidates from other areas of specialization will be considered. Quality Matters certification is preferred.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in criminal justice in face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities.
- Conduct original research in a specialized area of criminal justice, leading to scholarly publications and presentations.
- Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in their academic and professional development.
- Participate in departmental and university service activities, including committee work and academic advising.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and assessment of the criminal justice curriculum.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a closely related field, prepared to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
- Demonstrated expertise and scholarly activity in a specialized area of criminal justice.
- Strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring students; Commitment to teaching in a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) preferred.
- Potential to conduct high-quality research and publish in reputable academic journals. Record of successful grant writing, research, and publication preferred.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to a positive work environment.
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service activities.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
- The successful candidate will supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate research, as well as any research assistants hired to work on grant projects.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a closely related field from an accredited university.
- Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching, grant writing, research, and service.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
Licensing and Certifications:
- As required by the applicant's area of specialization.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice position is primarily based on-campus. The position involves a combination of teaching, research, and service responsibilities, with regular office hours and participation in departmental meetings and events. Occasional travel for conferences and professional development may be required. This position requires the ability to sit, stand, and use a computer for extended periods. Occasional lifting and carrying of materials may be required during teaching and research activities.
