Position: Groundskeeper/Maintenance

Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Manager of Facilities and Operations, this position is responsible for maintaining the assigned district’s building in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the education program.

The Groundskeeper/Maintenance personnel is responsible for providing the necessary leadership to keep the grounds and buildings of all assigned properties(s) clean, safe, functional and secure in accordance with prescribed codes and established District Policies and Standards.

Keep all district buildings and particularly all district athletic fields, turf areas, parking facilities, outdoor lighting, landscaping, all outdoor equipment, playgrounds, interior of buildings, exterior of buildings and building equipment in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of it may be made at all times. Responsible for maintaining the physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of it may be made at all times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Not limited to the areas listed below):

  • Make routine repairs and/or reports needed for repairs in writing to the Facilities and Operations Department
  • Projects a positive image for Kentwood Public Schools with his/her crew, whenever you come in contact with the public, guests or visitors on school sites.
  • Works closely with the Director of Athletics and/or administrators to be prepared for scheduled activities and unscheduled events as needed.
  • Works closely with crew to assure proper distribution of workload to maintain high standards of turf management.
  • Repair or installation of the following as appropriate:

  • Athletic equipment
  • Masonary work
  • All areas of yards
  • Up-keep of yards, athletic fields, and playground equipment
  • Up-keep and maintenance of buildings and building equipment
  • Maintain care and appropriate use of supplies and equipment:
  • Place all supplies in proper storage areas.
  • Notify the Manger of Facilities and Operations if supplies or materials are of inferior grade.
  • Be responsible for condition, safety, and proper operation of all mechanical equipment, oiling and greasing properly at regular intervals.
  • Communicate with Manager of Facilities and Operations of any maintenance or repairs of equipment that cannot be handled by the grounds person.
  • Responsible for maintaining established preventive maintenance program to include associated records. The preventive maintenance program will identify daily, weekly, monthly, and annual duties.
  • Care of Grounds:
  • Shall be able to prepare and maintain athletic fields and turf including:
  • Mowing
  • Sprinkling
  • Weeding
  • Lining fields for athletic contests
  • Dragging track and playing surfaces, including fill where necessary
  • Fertilize athletic fields and grounds in the spring, mid-summer, and fall or as directed.
  • Assure that all parking lot drains are cleaned at regular intervals and maintained in a satisfactory condition
  • Responsible for the cleanliness of sidewalks and steps, if required (Note: It is important to report needed repair of same)
  • Remove grass and weeds from walk edges, as necessary
  • Assure that all walks and steps are free from ice, snow, mud, dust, and other debris as required/assigned
  • Cut weeds and remove grass from parking areas, along fences, and around shrubbery, as needed
  • Remove debris from parking areas and grounds, as required
  • Responsible for the removal of snow from all driveways, parking lots, and school sidewalks and easements when directed to do so
  • Spread sand, salt or products to prevent slipping during snowy weather
  • Plant, prune and trim trees and shrubbery as directed, along with inspecting for insect damage.
  • Move supplies and equipment (district-wide) as directed
  • Pick up supplies, parts or equipment from vendors as directed
  • Inspect and make repairs to playground equipment
  • Supervise temporary employees (especially during summer) to see that they are in accordance with school district policies.
  • Responsible to maintain all buildings and all building equipment
  • Be on call as needed for emergency repairs, equipment monitoring, overtime, or special needs falling outside of the normal working hours.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships and interactions with staff, students, community and other stakeholders.
  • Adhere to procedures as defined within health safety standards as per OSHA and MIOSHA.
  • Adhere to School District Emergency Procedures.
  • Adhere to district handbook, school schedule (i.e., practice times, game times - both home and away).
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Required to perform some Saturday and Sunday work.
  • Ability to work in an economically, culturally and racially diverse environment.
  • Regular, reliable and punctual attendance
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and make adjustments to various types of equipment, as needed.
  • Posess skills in one or more of the turf and ground crafts, such as turf management, mechanics of equipment, herbicides, fertilizing, equipment operation, maintaining buildings and building equipment and have general knowledge of team building concepts.
  • Ability to pass a written and physical test, when indicated.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education Policies.

  • Hold a valid CDL driver’s license; minimum Class B license, preferred.
  • Shall possess skills in maintaining school grounds in a manner acceptable to the general health, safety, and grounds maintenance standards of school buildings.
  • Must have the ability to operate, maintain, and make adjustments to the various equipment used to maintain turf, trees, shrubbery, and other landscape features.
  • Training/Education Requirements:

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance.
  • Knowledge of herbicides and fertilizers.
  • Knowledge of grounds equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work in an economically, culturally, and racially diverse environment
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent. Five years of experience in the custodial field, preferred
  • Basic computer knowledge, knowledge of building layouts, system and controls.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 80 lbs., such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally will work in a loud area.
