- Implement the Michigan Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling curriculum.
- Manage and monitor assigned caseload of students.
- Coordinate standardized testing program.
- Assist with building the school’s master schedule.
- Maintain student records.
- Counsel students, parents, and guardians for the purpose of enhancing student success, academically, socially, and emotionally in school.
- Guide and counsel groups and individual students through the development of educational and career plans.
- Develops and implements a variety of special programs and classes (e.g. group and teamwork, leadership, bullying, coping with divorce or death, social skills, etc).
- Monitors students' progress for the purpose of identifying issues and taking appropriate action for increasing student success.
- Counsel small groups and individual students with problems; refer severe problems to appropriate community resources.
- Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students.
- Refer students and families to appropriate community agencies and resources as needed.
- Coordinate, conduct or participate in activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school.
- Evaluate and revise the building guidance and counseling program.
- Provide intervention, leadership and support to de-escalate student conflicts and crisis.
- Participate in department and school improvement efforts.
- Assist in the transition of students from elementary to middle school, middle school to high school, and high school to post-secondary education or vocational education as appropriate.
- Assist students and families with the course selection process according to state requirements and scheduling students into courses as appropriate.
- Collect, organize and analyze information about individuals through records, tests, interviews, and professional sources, to appraise their interests, aptitudes, abilities and personality characteristics for educational and career planning.
- An understanding of a “learning styles” approach to instruction and a respect for students’ multiple intelligences.
- Counsel and guide students and parents in the use of test results for educational and career planning
- A commitment to lifelong learning as demonstrated by attendance at seminars, in-services and training, as appropriate.
- Responds to crises situations when appropriate.

- Master’s Degree in school counseling is required
- Current or valid Michigan Counseling License is required
- Professional experience at the secondary level is preferred
