TITLE: ELA/Special Education Teacher (Dual Certified)

 

Location: Keough Memorial Academy (Therapeutic Day School)

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the school principal, the teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities. The person in this position is responsible for providing specialized instruction for students with disabilities, such that the students benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed supports.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment.
  2. Implement substitute lesson plans for absent teachers based on the lesson plans outlined by the full-time teacher or at times may be required to create lesson plans that meet the learning objective of the class.
  3. Review homework and classwork and be able to correct student errors and/or provide feedback.
  4. Maintain proper classroom management.
  5. Follow all policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates.
  6. Oversee pupil behavior in class and surrounding areas and maintain normal classroom routines and discipline within the classroom.
  7. Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies in accordance with the student’s IEP.
  8. Instruct students using a variety of literary genres and employ strategies to develop high level comprehension and problem-solving skills
  9. Teach and reinforce acceptable social/skills and classroom behaviors through the use positive behavioral supports.
  10. Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies in accordance with the student’s IEP.
  11. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining a safe learning environment for all students.
  12. Provide crisis intervention, as needed, for students and those in small group classrooms.
  13. Experience teaching ELA at 8-12 levels per the Massachusetts Frameworks
  14. Experience working with students with social/emotional needs required.
  15. Maintain appropriate boundaries with students, staff, and parents.
  16. Experience teaching within a therapeutic school and/or classroom preferred
  17. Adheres to the adopted policies of the Bellingham School Committee.

SKILLS/ABILITY:

  1. Must be a person of professional and personal integrity.
  2. A high degree of patience and tact in dealing with the general public, parents, teachers, administrators, prospective teachers and other personnel.
  3. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES and/or DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university, required.
  2. Master’s degree preferred.
  3. MA DESE License Required English 8-12
  4. MA DESE License in Moderate Disabilities 5-12 required or willing to work towards licensure in first year acceptable.

 

SALARY: BTA Salary Schedule

 

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

You are required to be physically capable of escorting students from the building in case of a practice drill or emergency situation in a safe and timely fashion.

Must be able to move about the classroom and have the ability to bend, sit or stand frequently.
