This is a Countywide Promotional Examination open only to eligible Kern County employees who have successfully completed their initial probationary period and received an overall rating of standard or better on the last employee performance report.
Salary : Level I : $1,538.15 - $1,838.23 Biweekly Level II : $1,786.40 - $2,134.91 Biweekly
Examinations Schedule :
- Written exam : will be conducted on February 11, 2025
- Oral Exam : qualified applicants will be notified of the testing date five days prior to the examination.
Examinations : Written Exam (Weight 30%) : Will be conducted for the purpose of testing applicants knowledge in the functions and responsibilities of an elected legislative body such as Board of Supervisors; basic functions and structure of Kern County government; office procedures, methods and practices.
THE HUMAN RESOURCES DIVISION MAY LIMIT THE NUMBER ADVANCING TO THE ORAL EXAM TO APPROXIMATELY THE TOP 18, BASED UPON THE FINAL EARNED RESULTS OF THE WRITTEN EXAM.
Oral Exam (Weight 70%) : Will be conducted for the purpose of appraising training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the position.
Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.
If the number of applicants successful on the written exam is insufficient to warrant an oral exam, the written exam shall be weighted 100%.
Examination components for promotional testing will be administered during scheduled date(s) / time(s) / location without exception.
Minimum Qualifications / Employment Standards :
Level I : High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent, AND three (3) years of increasingly responsible clerical experience which would provide the following knowledge, skills and abilities. (see below)
Level II : High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent, AND six (6) years of increasingly responsible clerical experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities OR one (1) year of experience comparable to Deputy Clerk of the Board I in the Kern County classification system.

This examination will establish an eligible list from which immediate appointment(s) will be made. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
