Bi-Weekly Salary: Level I: $1,934.80 - $2,312.27, Level II: $2,033.75 - $2,430.52

EXAMINATION SCHEDULE:
Qualified candidates will be notified of the testing date five days prior to the examination.

ExaminationsWritten Exam (Weight 100%): May include knowledge of terminology and diagnosis in mental health and substance abuse, child and adolescent development, case management, interviewing and counseling techniques, basic mental health laws, community resources and other relevant subjects.

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

Minimum Qualifications/Employment Standards: 
Level I: Completion of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, Behavioral Science, Social Work or a related field. If the degree is not in a related field, coursework must have included 12 semester or 16 quarter units in the behavioral sciences OR completion of sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter units from an accredited college or university AND two (2) years of full time paid experience working in a social service agency, including one (1) year providing services to the mentally ill in a mental health setting; OR possession of a valid license as a Psychiatric Technician or Vocational Nurse issued by the state of California AND two (2) years of full time paid experience working with the chronically mental ill in a mental health setting.

Level II: Completion of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, Social Work or related field; OR a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, Behavioral Science,  Social Work or related field AND one (1) year of full time, paid experience working with the chronically mentally ill in a mental health setting; If the degree is not in a related field, coursework must have included 12 semester or 16 quarter units in the behavioral sciences. OR completion of sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter units of course work from an accredited college or university AND three (3) years of full time, paid experience working with the chronically mentally ill in a mental health setting; OR possession of a valid license as a Psychiatric Technician or Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California AND three (3) years of full time, paid experience working with the chronically mentally ill in a mental health setting.

Possession of a valid Class "C" Driver's license is required.

Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.

A background check may be conducted for this classification. 

A background investigation is required of candidates who wish to be considered for correctional medicine assignments. Felony convictions are disqualifying, and some misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying. 
 
Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.

Note: Incumbents may be required to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends

Applicants who wish to be considered for bilingual employment must submit a bilingual certificate issued by the Kern County Human Resources Division or its authorized agent, Bakersfield College.

This examination will establish an eligible list from which immediate appointment(s) will be made. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates are encouraged to indicate acceptable geographical locations in which they would accept employment on their application form. Candidates MUST be willing to travel to these locations (areas/district offices).
