Job Description:
As a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), you will provide basic nursing care under the supervision of a physician. Your role will involve assisting in the assessment of the patient’s health status and supporting the physician in performing procedures and implementing additional orders as required. Here are the key responsibilities of an LVN.
Essential Functions:
Patient Care:
- Assist in the assessment of the patient’s health status, including vital signs, symptoms, and medical history.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments, following established protocols and guidelines.
- Monitor patients' conditions and report any changes or concerns to the supervising physician.
- Provide basic patient care, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and personal hygiene.
- Assist patients with mobility, transfers, and ambulation, ensuring their safety and comfort.
- Prepare and maintain patient rooms, ensuring cleanliness and organization.
Procedure Assistance:
- Assist the physician during urological procedures, such as cystoscopies, prostate biopsies, catheterizations, and urodynamic studies.
- Set up and prepare the necessary equipment and instruments, ensuring they are sterile and in proper working condition.
- Provide support to patients during procedures, offering reassurance and monitoring their comfort and safety.
Medication Administration:
- Administer medications, including intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, as prescribed by the physician.
- Educate patients on the purpose, dosage, and potential side effects of medications.
- Document medication administration accurately and ensure compliance with medication safety protocols.
Patient Education and Counseling:
- Provide patient education regarding urological conditions, treatments, and post-procedure care instructions.
- Answer patient questions and address concerns related to urological procedures, medications, and lifestyle modifications.
- Offer guidance on self-care measures, such as catheter care, wound care, and managing urological symptoms.
Patient Monitoring and Follow-up:
- Monitor and assess patients' post-procedure recovery, including vital signs, pain levels, and any potential complications.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure timely and appropriate follow-up care for patients, such as scheduling appointments, arranging laboratory tests, or referring to specialists if needed.
Documentation and Record-Keeping:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, including patient assessments, treatment plans, procedures performed, and medication administration.
- Adhere to confidentiality and privacy regulations when handling patient information.
Collaborative Care:
- Collaborate with other members of the healthcare team, including physicians, registered nurses, medical assistants, and administrative staff, to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care.
- Communicate effectively and provide relevant information to team members during patient handoffs and shift changes.
Infection Control and Safety:
- Adhere to infection control protocols and maintain a clean and sterile environment in the outpatient urology clinic.
- Follow safety guidelines and procedures, including proper disposal of hazardous materials and adherence to standard precautions.
Professional Development:
- Stay updated on current urological practices, procedures, and advancements through continuing education and professional development opportunities.
- Comply with licensing requirements and participate in relevant training programs.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Completion of a state-approved Licensed Vocational Nurse program and possession of a valid LVN license.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Good knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and procedures.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
- Physical stamina and ability to perform tasks that may involve standing, bending, lifting, and moving patients.
- Adherence to legal, ethical, and professional standards of nursing practice.
