GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB
Reports to and serves under the supervision of the Jail Deputy Director/Designee. Plans and directs the day-to-day operations and activities of the Detention Center staff and detainees to ensure a secure and safe correctional environment. Serves as on-call official and is required to respond to emergency situations.

- Coordination of shift activities, security procedures and administrative reports.
- The ability to identify and arrange training needs for other Officers.
- Act as liaison between local governmental, mutual aid agencies, doctors, lawyers, probation officers, and families.
- Coordinates activities of the detention center with local law enforcement agencies, state and local agencies.
- Must be able to prioritize work assignments and complete such duties in a timely manner under deadline.
- Must demonstrate good judgment and the ability to make decisions quickly.
- Must possess excellent communication skills and be able to interact with all County departments and divisions, courts, co-workers and the general public.
- Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology used within the department and understands computer terminology.
- Has thorough knowledge of the criminal justice system and correctional facility procedures.
- Has thorough knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to inmate detention.
- Has thorough knowledge of policies and procedures covering inmate security, booking and release, classification, care, and security.
- Has thorough knowledge of County policies regarding the department and County functions.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- Requires High School Diploma.
- Five (5) years of progressive supervisory detention work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in corrections or law enforcement, supplemented by detention officer certification training.
- Must have completed Basic Correctional Officers Certification and be certified as a Class II Officer or higher (or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience).
- Must complete a minimum of 40 hours of mandatory in-service training per year.
- Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver’s License and have a clean driving record.
- Must maintain and be current with firearms qualifications.
- Must pass credit and background checks.
- Each applicant who is tendered an offer for employment for any position with Kershaw County shall be tested for the use of drugs specified in the County policy.
- Must be able to exert 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must be able to physically restrain an inmate.
- Must be able to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
- Must possess visual acuity to prepare records and reports; observe people and things for security purposes, and operate electronic control panels and view computer screens.
