Position Overview:
We are seeking a passionate and committed Social Studies Teacher to deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction to students while also serving as an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) elective teacher. The ideal candidate will foster a love of learning, critical thinking, and academic success in all students through content-rich Social Studies instruction and AVID strategies focused on college and career readiness.
This position plays a key role in supporting student achievement through a combination of content teaching and the implementation of AVID methodologies that empower students with strong organizational, inquiry, collaboration, and reading/writing skills.
Responsibilities:
Social Studies Instruction
Design and deliver rigorous, standards-aligned Social Studies lessons aligned to the New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework.
Differentiate instruction to support students' diverse learning needs and create an inclusive classroom environment.
Promote civic engagement, global awareness, and historical thinking through meaningful instructional practices.
Implement formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to support academic growth.
AVID Elective Teaching
Teach AVID elective classes to support students in building college readiness skills, including note-taking, time management, goal-setting, and study strategies.
Foster a classroom environment that promotes student leadership, collaboration, and self-advocacy.
Support AVID site team initiatives and collaborate with colleagues to embed AVID strategies school-wide.
- Organize college visits, guest speakers, and other experiences that align with AVID's mission.
Professional and Collaborative Responsibilities
Collaborate with colleagues to plan, reflect, and enhance instructional practices across content areas.
Maintain accurate records and track student data to inform instruction and program planning.
Participate actively in professional learning communities and relevant AVID training and implementation activities.
Communicate regularly with families to promote student engagement and success.
Stay current with educational research and best practices through ongoing professional development.
Job Qualifications
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Studies, History, Political Science, Education, or a related field.
Valid New York State Certification in one or more of the following areas is required:
Childhood Education Grades 1-6, N-6
Social Studies Grades 5-9
Social Studies Grade 7-12 & 5-6 Extension
Knowledge of the New York State K–12 Social Studies Framework and Next Generation Learning Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies.
Willingness to attend AVID Summer Institute or other official AVID training as needed.
