What are the responsibilities and job description for the PT Lifeguard/Swim Instructor position at Ketchikan Gateway Borough?
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor, performs duties in order to ensure an orderly and safe pool and facility environment.
Plan and lead swim classes in a structured swim program under the supervision of the Aquatic Supervisor.
- Enforce facility rules during swim classes and recreational use of the pool.
- Respond to emergency situations following pool procedures and using American Red Cross Lifeguard methods.
- Assist in performing light maintenance to maintain a clean and orderly pool area and facility, including pool vacuuming.
- Perform DEC requirements, including water chemistry tests and maintain records of results.
- Maintain facility order in pool and surrounding areas.
- Perform custodial services to maintain a clean and orderly facility, including locker rooms, hallways, weight room, bathrooms and offices.
- Perform CPR and/or first aid, as needed.
- Work with the Aquatic Supervisor and other instructors to plan, secure supplies, lead swim classes and keep appropriate activity records according to American Red Cross guidelines.
- Monitor activity area during assigned hours to make certain the pool facility is prepared for assigned swim class and clean up after classes.
- Maintain regular contact with program participants, parents and the general public. Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with co-workers and other departments.
Additional Job Duties:
- Provide instruction to other employees of this or a similar job classification in all aspects of procedure and technique relating to the duties required by this job description unless such instruction requires a specialized certification which the employee doing the training does not have.
- Perform other related duties as directed by the Aquatics Supervisor.
Experience working with children in an aquatic environment. Knowledge of water safety and rules of conduct for users of water facilities. Good interpersonal skills, enjoy working with the public, and ability to respond to emergency situations and determine appropriate course of action using established procedures and common sense.
Physical Activities include:
Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell. Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, and climbing on stools and ladders.
Lead games and supervise children in a variety of physical activities.
Strong swimming skills; water rescue of children and/or adults of all ages and sizes; performing CPR and first aid; custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, bending, and stooping; using and moving water equipment, including chemicals weighing up to eighty (80) pounds.
LICENSES:
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or Ellis Lifeguard Certification
- First aid certificate
- CPR certificate
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Must be 15 years of age for Lifeguard position.
- Must be 16 years of age for swim instructor.
Any combination of related education and/or related experience will be considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability.
