Responsibilities & Requirements

The Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) maintains operational responsibility for one or more nursing units on a twenty-four hour a day basis. Responsible for planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care to patients in all settings where nursing care is provided in collaboration with other health care providers. The CNM is accountable for the provision of safe patient care, compliance with department strategic objectives, participation in performance and practice improvement activities. The delivery of evidence based nursing care at Kettering Health Network reflects the philosophies, missions, vision and values of the organization and nursing department.

 

Minimum Education• Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Bachelor’s degree in another field if willing to begin a program leading to a Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree in Nursing within 12 months of hire and completed within 3 years• Masters in Nursing preferred, a Masters may be mandatory if required by a regulatory agency

 

Required Licenses[Ohio, United States] Registered Nurse• Licensed in the state of Ohio as a Registered NurseBLS• National certification by the end of 2nd year in position

 

Minimum Work Experience• Minimum of two years of progressive clinical experience with demonstrated leadership skills

displays name badge appropriately• Reports environmental, personnel and patient/family safety issues to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner and follows through accordingly• Demonstrates accountability, reports mistakes and “near misses” timely and accurately• Attends (or reviews via HealthStream) a minimum of three Town Hall meetings• Communicates concerns/issues to appropriate leader timely and effectively• Ensures appropriate procedures and guidelines are followed; attention to detail/safety• Works to empower staff to find resolutions to problems/issues• Demonstrates skill using de-escalation techniques• Utilizes the service recovery process; assures that the concerns of patient and family members are addressed• Demonstrates an understanding of continuous improvement through processes that support QA/PI strategic focus and goals• Participate in strategic planning and quality initiates• Targets important areas for innovation and develops solutions that address meaningful work issues• Leads organizational initiatives utilizing lean processes• Recognizes /anticipates other's needs; willingly offers assistance• Assures an environment conducive to healing• Willing to learn and advance skills; seeks new knowledge to adjust to changing needs of the work environment• Determines current and future supply and demand for nursing care• Serves as a change agent, assisting others in understanding the importance, necessity, impact and process of change• Supports staff during times of difficult transitions• Adapts leadership style to situational needs• Demonstrates respect and sensitivity to the age specific and culturally diverse needs of the patient and family and treats patients with dignity and kindness under difficult situations.• Maintains positive interpersonal relationshi8ps with patients, visitors, physicians and other hospital personnel• Supports and demonstrates the “ Excellence for Life” principles which may include but not limited to ICARE, rounding, team huddles and call backs.• Incorporates the principles of Relationship Based Care into daily practice• Establishes and environment that promotes participatory and shared decision making between staff, leadership and members of the interdisciplinary team• Develops strategies to support the professional development of staff• Coaches and mentors staff to optimize potential and assist in the meeting of professional goals• Routinely rounds on staff and patients ; addresses issues that are impacting the unit and/or patient experience• Identifies, intervenes and reports risk management issues• Assists or leads policy revisions and process improvements• Demonstrates appropriate clinical judgment and critical thinking skills• Accountable for the daily operations of the unit/department• Develops strategies that support the strategic goals of nursing and the Network• Participates in community and/or in-house disaster readiness activities• Collaborates with the staffing office and nursing leadership to assure safe staffing for patient care areas• Utilizes appropriate chain of command to resolve conflicts and promote communication• Facilitates compliance with regulatory standards• Assesses, prioritizes, provides rationale for department requests for capital equipment/services• Manages productivity and supplies within budget; provides explanations for variances and aberrancies• Assists with the development of the department budgets; assures that adequate resources (staff, supplies, equipment) are allocated• Evaluates staff competency and addresses areas of concern• Demonstrates the value of lifelong learning through one’s own example• Creates an environment in which others are setting expectations and holding each other accountable• Manages performance through rewards, recognition, counseling and disciplinary action• Works to assure that units/staff have the equipment and supplies need to provide patient care• Coaches and develops staff to address issues related to patients, families and members of the interdisciplinary team.• Routinely responds to staff concerns and complaints in a timely manner• Exhibit willingness to assist co-workers across departments and the Network• Resolves conflicts in a forgiving spirit; takes appropriate action for resolution• Collaborates with Human Resources for issues related to human resource management including the hiring of staff and the use of the disciplinary process in accordance with hospital policy• Responds to opportunities to support, recognize and celebrate teamwork• Support and implement organizational wide patient safety initiatives• Works collaboratively within the team to enhance the care to patients/customers• Intervenes to address issues impacting interdisciplinary team functioning  New Hire / Annual CompetenciesNursing competencies are based on ACHC standards or department specific needs/specialties
