JOB TITLE: Veterinary Assistant
JOB STATEMENT
The Veterinary Assistant is responsible for beginning the procedures for examination, restraint of the pet, and help during patient treatment when necessary. The VA must assist doctor and CVT in all aspects of surgery, x-ray and dental procedures. The VA must be able to pay attention to detail, respond quickly and calmly to crises and handle animals in situations that may be less than ideal. In addition, the Veterinary Assistant must be able to communicate well with clients, showing care and concern for their pets.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- 20% Assisting in surgery, including preparing the animal; monitor the anesthesia and patient vital signs, keep all surgery records current, preparing surgical packs, prepare and autoclaving surgical supplies. Clean up surgery, treatment, lab and exam areas.
- 15% Greet clients with a smile addressing both client and patient by name. Weight pet and escort to exam room. Perform TPR. Restrain the animal during exam and treatments by doctor.
- 10% Set-up and read various lab test including stool samples and identify parasites. Perform routine laboratory analyses including hematology, blood chemistry, urinalysis (including collection of specimen), skin scraping. Keep lab area neat and clean.
- 10% Dispense medications - count tablets and prepare prescription label for the medications the doctor has prescribed.
- 10% CVA is responsible for helping with dental cleanings and paperwork involved with this procedure.
- 5% Assist with taking and developing x-rays and the maintenance of the x-ray equipment.
- 5% Bath animals before release if necessary
- 5% Be responsible for the cleanliness of the clinic and kennel area. It is imperative that the wards and kennels be kept clean and disinfected.
- 5% Prepare and send out outside lab tests. Notify doctor of lab results.
- 5% Assist with the patient monitoring and exercise.
- 5% Assist the receptionist when necessary.
- 5% Perform other duties as assigned by doctor or office manager.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
- 7 hours minimum of continuing education every year is required
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Must have the ability to communicate well with clients under all conditions and at all times
- Must be organized, efficient and able to multi-task
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $17.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 40 per week
