POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
POSITION: Assistant Fuels Module Leader
One full-time, non-exempt position
LOCATION: Fire Management Office
L’Anse, Michigan
SUPERVISORY CONTROL: Director of Fire and Emergency Management
SALARY: Firefighter Type 1 - Grade 8 (minimum starting wage = $20.21/hour). (additional quals and experience will start higher)
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
· Must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid unrestricted driver’s license, be insurable to operate KBIC vehicles or personal vehicles during work hours. This is a requirement of our Insurance carrier. (Must also sign the KBIC Driving Record Check form.)
· Must obtain Engine Operator qualification (ENOP) as directed by supervisor.
· Must be qualified as a Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1)
· Must obtain Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5) qualification as directed by supervisor.
· May be required to obtain a Class B CDL (commercial driver license) if necessary.
· Must obtain Faller 2 (FAL2) certification as directed by the supervisor.
· Must have three (3) year previous wildland firefighting experience.
· Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of basic fire behavior as influenced by fuel, weather, and topography and of the duties and responsibilities of initial fire attack suppression.
· Must possess a working knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS) organization and operation to work effectively within the structure.
· Must possess skills in basic orienteering (use of Global Position Units (GPS), compass, reading topography, and quad maps) and multi-channel radio communication to locate fires, properties, and local landmarks effectively.
· Must be able to travel for an extended period of time regularly.
· Must be able to lift 50 pounds throughout an 8-hour shift.
· Must be in good physical condition and maintain an Arduous fitness level.
· Must practice safety habits at all times while at work.
· Must have good knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
· Must have an excellent knowledge of GIS mapping applications.
· Must have report writing experience.
· Must have practical knowledge of fire behavior and suppression tactics to ensure safe wildland fire suppression operations.
· Must have good written, verbal, listening, and visual communication skills.
· Must possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s license, a good driving record, and must be insurable. It is preferred to obtain a Federal Government operating license annually in order to operate federal government vehicles on fire assignment.
· Employment is contingent upon the satisfactory result of a security background check, pre-employment drug testing, pre-employment physical and successfully passing the Work Capacity Test at the arduous level.
INDIAN PREFERENCE: Preference will be given to qualified individuals of American Indian descent.
VETERAN PREFERENCE: Preference will also be given to Veterans (need DD214).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Assists in providing technical and administrative supervision of a 5-person fuels module. Assists in the operation and supervision of wildland fire engines, modules, and crews.
· Operates department vehicles for the purpose of transporting personnel, equipment and in the performance of fire suppression or prescribed fire activities.
· Acts as the module lead in the absence of the Module Leader.
· Is responsible for the maintenance of specialized equipment and ensures fire equipment and vehicles are kept in a full state of readiness.
· During initial attack fire suppression activities, participates in Fireline construction, backfiring and burnout operations, engine and pump operations, tree falling and holding/patrol/mop-up operations.
· Operates chainsaws during fuels projects and fire suppression.
· Performs all aspects of wildland and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop-up. Moves dirt, chops brush, removes small trees, etc. to construct a fire line.
· Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior during the suppression of wildland fire incidents.
· Inventory fuel beds, prepare associated reports, perform hazard fuel reduction projects, monitor burning conditions, pile vegetation debris and act in assigned positions such as ignition or holding specialist or other positions during actual fuel reduction efforts by prescribed fire.
· May perform project work which may include, but is not limited to: cleaning outdoor recreational facilities, mowing grass and trimming shrubs, performing trail maintenance and building maintenance duties; removes and disposes of hazard trees; and so forth.
· Participates in formal and informal training programs to comply with policy and regulations.
· Participates in and leads fire and safety training in the techniques, practices, and methods of fire suppression and the safe, efficient operation and use of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in fire line activities, with emphasis on those used in the particular function to which assigned.
· Participates in and leads module/crew proficiency checks and drills. Participates in safety sessions and fire critiques. Ensures own and welfare and safety of others in all aspects of the assignment.
· May perform all-risk emergency management duties such as emergency response, mitigation, and recovery efforts.
