SUMMARY:
A Parks Maintenance Worker I works generally independently or with a Parks Maintenance II or lead worker while performing a variety of entry level tasks for the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of facilities, fixtures, and equipment at parks, athletic/sports fields, trails, and other recreational areas, including, but not limited to: landscaping, pruning, vegetation control, public restrooms, and basic repair such as for chain link fences, parks, playgrounds, facilities, splash pad and related equipment.
- Provide grounds maintenance including: mowing, weed eating, irrigation system maintenance, and repair; litter and trash control; pest control services; signage; maintenance of park benches, picnic tables, grills, and trash cans; trimming, planting, mulching and landscaping; and hauling heavy items and equipment.
- Provides general custodial services including: restroom cleaning and trash collection.
- Provides general maintenance and support at special events including preparing activities and litter/trash control; hauling light and heavy items, installing temporary safety fences and trash cans.
- Required to operate and have working knowledge of construction and maintenance equipment such as pickup trucks, gators, and mowers.
- Required to operate and have working knowledge small power and maintenance equipment such as weed eater, blowers, edger’s, compactors, drills, compressors, generators, chainsaws, and table saws.
- Performs special winter work projects.
- Operates, maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, and performs minor repairs of various equipment including hand and mechanical tools and motorized equipment.
- Sets up work zones as appropriate and ensures safety procedures and proper use of safety equipment at all times.
- Provides general maintenance support to special events.
- Performs inspections of park facilities and playgrounds as well as related duties as required.
This classification is distinguished from the, Parks Maintenance Worker I, by the advanced skill level and independence exercised by the Parks Maintenance Worker II.
- Parks Maintenance Worker I will be required to operate a Key Pen Parks vehicle.
- This position is required to be able to make decisions based on knowledge and training in the field as issues arise.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
- This position works indoors and outdoors.
- Desire to learn, work on team, positive attitude.
- Provide good customer service to public Park users.
- Must be able to operate a variety of hand tools, power tools and maintenance equipment to perform tasks is a safe and responsible manner.
- Ability to operate, or ability to learn to operate, tractors, and mowers,
- Ability to learn to operate backhoes and other heavy machinery in a safe and responsible manner.
- Must have good oral communications skills.
- This position regularly involves lifting, bending, reaching, standing, walking, talking, hearing, writing, grasping, repetitive motions and the ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time in all kinds of weather conditions, able to lift 75 lbs.
- Ability to respond and react to an emergency in an effective manner.
- Must be able to work semi independently.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include non-standard workweeks, split shifts, evenings and/or holidays to assist with evening gate closures, special events and emergency repairs. Most work is done between 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have a valid Washington State driver's license.
- Medical/physical evaluation and drug test prior to employment, at Parks expense.
- A criminal background check through law enforcement agencies will be conducted on all successful applicants prior to their being appointed to this position.
- Education equivalent to graduation from high school and at least 5 years’ experience working in a municipal maintenance, including seasonal work, is preferred.
- Parks, public grounds maintenance, irrigation and ball field maintenance preferred.
- Non-smoking workplace.

DESIRED LICENSES AND TRAININGS (or ability to obtain after hire):
- CPR /first aid certification.
- Traffic flagging certification.
- Plant identification course.
- Emergency management training ICS 100, 200, 700
- Basic computer training (Word, Excel)

Salary: $20.03 to $21.89 per hour (plus benefits)
Type of position: Full-time/40hr week. Regular hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Currently a Monday through Friday shift plus assistance with evening gate closures and selected community events (nights and weekends).
