Responsibilities

The Claims Supervisor is responsible for the administrative and technical areas of their team’s work. Responsible for the technical handling of workers’ compensation claims and account management of their unit. Interface with case management and clients as appropriate. Provide leadership of day to day activity of assigned claims team.

Key functions include but are not limited to the following:

Problem Solving

  • Oversee effectiveness of staff work flow.
  • Develop general team objectives.
  • Formulate appropriate plans to ensure successful completion of objectives.
  • Consider factors to contain legal fees, vendor fees, medical costs, and all other costs relating to the team.
  • Resolve problems involving functional claims handling, personnel matters, departmental objectives, and other assignments authorized by the assistant vice president or manager.

Decision Making

  • Claims in excess of adjusters authority, recommend investigation, evaluation, negotiation, and settlement methods in the amount of reserve to be established.
  • Make recommendations on administrative matters such as personnel and departmental objectives.
  • Based on facts and circumstances, use imagination and initiative to aggressively resolve claims.
  • Handle administrative matters up to the authority granted by the department head
  • Principle Accountability
  • Supervise all technical aspects of claims including coverage, disability benefit management, medical management, file management, litigation management, subrogation, reserving and settlement.
  • Verify and interpret coverage issues.
  • Provide the team with the guidance and training on functional claims problems.
  • Maintain and demonstrate knowledge of the Workers Compensation Act and Rules and Regulations in jurisdictions assigned.
  • Consult with client as necessary
  • Monitor workload assignments to staff to ensure equitable distribution.
  • Management of reporting team including hiring, performance reviews, corrective actions, and counseling of staff.
  • Inform direct report of functional and administrative matters when appropriate.
  • Keep team abreast of all legal changes in assigned jurisdictions. Ensure compliance of changes and execution in file.
  • Assist in planning and establishing objectives and assist in their implementation.
  • Attend and participate in training sessions to the accounts or account visits and claim reviews.
  • Identify unfavorable trends notify appropriate departments.
  • Ensure team’s work is in accordance with guidelines established.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years’ supervisory experience with heavy emphasis on workers compensation.
  • Five (5) years’ experience adjusting workers compensation claims.
  • PA/MD/DC claims experience preferred.
  • Possess and maintain a professional adjusting license in jurisdictions assigned.
  • Demonstrate exemplary oral and written communications.
  • Possesses analytical and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Exhibit highly defined leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of self-motivation and require minimal management direction.
