Senior Rail and Transit Engineer
Location: Baltimore, MD | Full-Time
We are working with a leading transportation engineering consultancy seeking a Senior Rail and Transit Engineer to oversee and manage track engineering projects for freight railroads and public transit agencies. This role offers the opportunity to work on major rail projects, providing technical leadership, project management, and client coordination.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage and deliver rail and transit engineering projects on time and within budget
• Lead a team in rail track design and engineering services for clients including MDOT MTA, CSXT, WMATA, Amtrak, DRPT, and VPRA
• Prepare technical reports, specifications, plans, and cost estimates
• Ensure accuracy and completeness of design efforts, utilizing industry-leading software
• Oversee and coordinate permit applications and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
• Participate in Design/Build projects, collaborating with contractors on constructability reviews, sequencing, and scheduling
• Act as the technical liaison between clients and project teams
• Identify and recommend design modifications as necessary
• Support proposal preparation, fee estimating, and contract negotiations
• Provide leadership in planning, work distribution, and budget adherence for complex engineering projects
Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
• 16 years of track design experience
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Maryland (DC and Virginia P.E. a plus)
• Demonstrated experience in rail track design, project management, and transit/freight rail implementation
• Familiarity with MDOT MTA, MDOT SHA, MDTA, and Baltimore DOT (preferred)
• Expertise in AREMA guidelines and rail engineering standards
• Proficiency in MicroStation V8i, Inroads, and Open Rail
• Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel)
• Exceptional attention to detail, organizational, and time management skills
• Self-motivated and able to lead projects independently
