SUMMARY
Performs any combination of instructional tasks as assigned by the Manager. Assists program participants in meaningful activity and interaction with others. Provides physical assistance to program participants to meet individual needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Continually supervises program participants through the course of their daily activities to ensure primarily their safety and welfare. Treat all individuals with love, dignity and respect.
- Assists program participants with their daily activities as prescribed by the Manager, including set-up and/or development of materials. Processes usually include escorting participants to and from various destinations and providing one on one assistance as needed. Records daily participant performance data.
- Discuss assigned activities with the Manager for understanding. Ask for clarification as needed, and accept feedback when provided.
- Provides physical assistance to participants as needed with self -help needs, personal hygiene, toileting and dressing.
- Supervise assigned participants during snack and mealtime to ensure safety and provide assistance as needed. Eat with participants and actively model interactions between participants.
- Provide assistance with group activities to ensure involvement of individual participants in activities and proper supervision of the group as a whole.
- Intervene on a formal and informal basis with participants exhibiting maladaptive behaviors as directed by Manager. This includes responding with least restrictive strategies, conducting data collection and reviewing incidents with Manager consistently and promptly.
- Ensure constant supervision on program participants with known tendencies to wander or attempt to leave the immediate area. Routinely discuss behaviors of concern with Manager in order to develop an intervention plan. Follow proper protocol when a participant is determined to be "missing".
- Supervise and assist participants in the daily process of their transportation.
- As needed and/or required, clean work areas, including rest rooms. This may consist of washing dishes, laundering clothes, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning surfaces, cleaning toilets and sinks, emptying trash, etc.
- Dispense program participant medications according to doctor orders and documents same.
- Communicate (verbally and in writing as per procedure) to Manager any unusual incidents that occur related to program participants.
- Performs other essential functions as required or necessary.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
In the absence of the Manager, oversees the assigned tasks or learning objectives of assigned program participants.
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school graduate or equivalent certification preferred. Minimum 1 year experience working with Developmental Disabilities or a related field preferred, but not required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Completion of designated training in Dementia, CPR/First Aid are required. Certification in Behavior Assistant Services, certification in Therapeutic Alternatives to Crisis Training is preferred. Training will be provided.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to deal courteously, tactfully and efficiently with program participants, staff members, family members, other caregivers, independent support coordinators and other support providers.
Emotional stability and maturity with a genuine interest in working with program participants.
Knowledge of life-safety and infection control protocols.
Willingness to comply with in-service, training or other mandates.
Ability to accept support and feedback in times of emotional distress specific to program participant needs or progression of their disease.
