JOB TITLE: Ophthalmic Assistant
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Insurance Coordinator position maintains accounts receivables, submitting patient claims to insurance companies, following up on the claims with insurance companies and collections activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Obtains patient eligibility status and benefit verification
- Compiling medical records as needed
- Verifies patient referral status
- Answers questions from patients, staff and insurance companies
- Identifies and prepares patient refunds
- Prepares, reviews, and sends patient statements
- Evaluates patient’s financial status and establishes budget payment plans; follows and reports status of delinquent accounts
- Reviews accounts for possible assignment and makes recommendations to the Supervisor; prepares information for the collection agency
- Performs various collections actions including contacting patients by phone; correcting and resubmitting claims to third party payers
- Maintains strict confidentiality; adheres to HIPAA guidelines and regulations
- Performs other work related duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES):
- Knowledge of medical billing/collection practice
- Knowledge of business office procedures
- Knowledge of basic medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients and employees
- Ability to operate a computer, computer software and basic office equipment
