Department : Performance Group (PG)

Reporting Relationship : Commissioning Manager

POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Commissioning (Cx) Technician III plays a key role in supporting successful execution of commissioning, re / retro-commissioning (RCx), and energy audit projects. This individual will provide technical expertise, oversight, and technical management to ensure that the performance of buildings, systems and equipment conform to design specifications. The Commissioning Technician may also be involved with marketing activities to support business development efforts.

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following :

Field Task Execution

  • Conducts performance evaluations and audits, including commissioning, re-commissioning, and retro-commissioning activities.
  • Primarily executes Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) functional tests, including point verification and sequence tests. Will be expected to assist other KFI personnel in the creation of, or witnessing of, other systems tests such as electrical, lighting, life safety, fire protection, or plumbing systems.
  • Actively participates in construction meetings. Directs commissioning meetings, recording action items and distributing these to all key stakeholders.
  • Performs construction inspections to ensure MEP installations conform to project documents.
  • Assists in performance of Test & Balance measurements.

Reporting

  • Works with Performance Group staff to develop technical reports.
  • May be asked to assist other department staff in calculating building energy use and savings.
  • Project Management

  • Act as a Project Manager, including developing a project plan, requesting and securing resources, and keeping the project on track for on time delivery.
  • Also ensures that all project work is properly set-up, documented, and reported.
  • Review MEP submittals for conformance to design documents and owner’s best interests.
  • May manage some financial aspects of assigned projects, including managing budgets, invoicing, and forecast projects.
  • Perform staff management, including managing Performance Group personnel working on their project(s).
  • Staff Mentorship

  • Develop skillsets of less experienced staff, including full-time and co-op / interns, in all aspects of the commissioning process and MEP systems fundamentals. May include some classroom-style sessions as well as traditional on the job field testing training.
  • Business Development

  • May be asked to contribute to aspects of the business development process, including :
  • Communicate and build internal and external relationships to ensure marketing strategy and input is aggressive, accurate, persuasive and timely.

  • Support new business development opportunities, including properly defined, scoped and priced.
  • Assist in development of letter proposals, including compiling technical and non-technical data, editing, printing, assembly and submittal of proposal.
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and interviews.
  • Attend conferences and trade shows, networking and identifying new leads and prospects.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Required

  • Operational knowledge of Building Automation Controls (BAS) experience.
  • 5 years of experience in direct HVAC, building operations, construction fields or engineering related firm.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and reliable personal vehicle for work-related travel.
  • Represent the company in a professional matter.
  • Proficient in use of MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with others.
  • Knowledge of computer technology and specific areas of application.
  • Travel : May include up to 25% domestic travel.
  • Preferred

  • 5 years of commissioning engineer experience.
  • Associate’s degree, technical HVAC certification, or related degree / certificate preferred. Bachelor’s degree in a non-engineering field with related field experience will be considered.
  • NEBB Building Systems Commissioning Certification (or equivalent).
  • The ideal candidate will have a building operations background.
  • Knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing design.
  • Familiar with HVAC Test & Balance (TAB) procedures.
  • Working experience with Revit.
  • Possess established industry contacts and relationships.
  • Working Conditions

  • Some work locations will feature the tough terrain typical of construction sites or require lifting or moving field testing equipment.

  • Compensation : $45.00-63.00 per hour. The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual qualifications, experience, work location, and education. This position is eligible for an annual bonus.
