Description :
The Safety Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive safety program to ensure a safe environment for members and staff. This role involves oversight of workplace safety, compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and the management of hazardous materials handling processes. The Safety Manager will work closely with all departments to promote a culture of safety and ensure adherence to best practices in risk management and regulatory compliance. The Kiawah Island Community Association has job classifications that present a rare blend of safety challenges including encounters with wildlife, public safety and security, mechanic shop, landscaping across multiple topographies, mechanical lifts, exposure to industrial road paving equipment, carpentry, chemical exposure and refueling operations, among others.
Responsibilities and Duties
Safety Program Management –
- With oversight by the Director of Safety and Security, develop, implement, and monitor workplace safety policies and procedures.
- Safeguard employee health by conducting regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate hazards.
- Create and deliver training programs on workplace safety, emergency procedures, and hazardous materials handling.
- Ensures accurate records and compliance with staff training.
Regulatory Compliance –
Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA and other relevant federal, state, and local regulations.Maintain accurate records of incidents, safety inspections, and compliance reports.Serve as the secondary point of contact for regulatory inspections and audits.Hazardous Materials Handling –
Develop and oversee protocols for the proper storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials.Ensure employees handling hazardous materials are properly trained and equipped.Monitor Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure accurate documentation is accessible.Incident Management –
Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.Prepare and submit incident reports to management and regulatory agencies as required.Collaborate with leadership to develop strategies to prevent recurrence of safety incidents.In coordination with the Director of Human Resources, work closely with the workers’ compensation insurance carrier to manage claim reporting and processing.Collaboration and Leadership –
Act as a safety advocate across the organization to foster a culture of safety and accountability.Partner with department managers to integrate safety practices into daily operations.Encourage employees to engage in proactive safety initiatives. Provide immediate feedback to management regarding recommendations to improve safety.Follow all company policies and procedures.Work efficiently in order to reduce costs.Other duties as assigned.Requirements :
Qualifications and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.Minimum of four years of experience in workplace safety, hazardous materials handling, or a related role.Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA and EPA safety regulations.Certification in safety (e.g., CSP, CIH, CHMM) is preferred.Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.Experience developing and delivering safety training programs.Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.Proficiency in incident investigation and reporting.Commitment to fostering a safe and compliant workplace.Office and fieldwork required; may include exposure to hazardous materials, prolonged periods of sitting at a desk or walking the facilities or island environment.Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.Must be able to wear personal protective equipmentMust be able to work in a variety of weather conditions such as, exposure to heat, humidity, cold & / or rainy conditions.Other requirements :
