Job Description:
As a Pediatric Physical Therapy Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the delivery of high-quality physical therapy services to pediatric patients under the supervision of licensed physical therapists. You will work closely with children and their families to implement therapeutic interventions, facilitate functional activities, and promote motor skill development and independence.
Responsibilities:
Patient Care and Treatment:
- Assist physical therapists in evaluating patients' functional abilities, mobility, and motor skills through standardized assessments and observations.
- Implement individualized treatment plans developed by physical therapists to address patients' specific goals and needs.
- Provide hands-on assistance and support to children during therapeutic exercises, activities, and functional tasks.
- Monitor patients' progress and response to treatment interventions, and communicate observations to the supervising physical therapist.
Therapeutic Interventions:
- Administer therapeutic modalities, such as heat, cold, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation, as directed by the supervising physical therapist.
- Instruct patients and their caregivers on proper techniques for performing therapeutic exercises and activities at home or in educational and community settings.
- Use adaptive equipment and assistive devices to facilitate mobility, positioning, and functional independence for children with physical disabilities.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of patient assessments, treatment sessions, progress notes, and discharge summaries in accordance with clinic policies and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare progress reports and collaborate with the supervising physical therapist to update treatment plans based on patients' ongoing needs and progress.
Patient and Family Education:
- Educate patients, families, and caregivers on injury prevention strategies, home exercise programs, and techniques for promoting optimal mobility and physical function.
- Provide guidance and support to parents and caregivers on activities of daily living, adaptive equipment use, and environmental modifications to enhance safety and accessibility for children with physical challenges.
Collaboration and Teamwork:
- Collaborate effectively with other members of the therapy team, including occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and other healthcare professionals, to coordinate integrated care and promote holistic patient outcomes.
- Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and interdisciplinary rounds to discuss patient progress, goals, and treatment plans.
Qualifications:
- Associate's degree from an accredited Physical Therapy Assistant program.
- Current licensure or certification as a Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) in the state of practice.
- Prior experience working with pediatric patients in a clinical or educational setting preferred.
- Knowledge of pediatric physical therapy principles, techniques, and interventions.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with children, families, and healthcare professionals.
