Position Summary:
USAMRIID, located at Fort Detrick, Maryland, works closely with other U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC) organizations, Department of Defense (DoD), the Interagency (including Interagency Laboratories), and private companies to accomplish its mission of protecting the Warfighter from biological threats and being prepared to investigate disease outbreaks or threats to public health. This includes conducting Research, Development, Testing, & Evaluation (RDTE) of medical countermeasure against biological threats and the safety, quality assurance, project management, and core support required for these research activities.
The Molecular Biology Division works to combat biological threats and weapons of mass destruction by developing high-throughput sequencing and protein profiling to identify emerging pathogens. It also evaluates and improves medical countermeasures, follows the DoD's roadmap for their development, and ensures their ethical use, including FDA approval. The Division also explores expanding indications and combinations with existing countermeasures.
The Immunology/Cell Biology Staff Scientist will conduct basic and applied research on current and emerging threats at BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-4 levels in support of the BD and infectious disease program. The Scientist will provide expertise generating 3D printed tissues, iPSC derived cell types and organoids and subsequent phenotypic characterization using a range of cell biological and/or immunological assessments. These studies in turn will support prophylactic and therapeutic product development against biothreat agents. The Scientist shall provide laboratory support with laboratory experiments in CDC registered laboratories and thus must hold and maintain BPRP status, IAW the provisions in this contract and applicable regulations.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute research studies designed to assess cell biological and immunological response to infectious agents as well as MCM in primary cells, 3D printed tissues, iPSC derived cell types and organoids.
- Develop and utilize methods to characterize host and viral cell populations. These studies will include both in vitro (e.g., immunofluorescence, plaque assays, ELISA) and in vivo (small animal) models.
- Provide Immunology/Cell Biology expertise and support to characterize the host responses to antimicrobial compounds using RT-PCR, reporter assay and Meso scale Discovery technologies to quantitate cytokines and
- Prepare protocols, standard operating procedures, and other documentation necessary to conduct assigned
- Responsible for assessing and maintaining laboratory supplies in assigned laboratories. Will assess and ensure that supplies are ordered or will be ordered using the current GFEBS ordering system. Responsible for maintaining assigned laboratory space in compliance with all applicable
- Communicate experimental data, laboratory or other work-related issues to the appropriate POC. Communicate with vendors for technical support and troubleshooting laboratory equipment with assigned
- Prepare and provide TPOC a Scientific Research Technical progress report NLT the last day of each
- Present research findings/presentations at monthly lab meetings and attend scientific discussion weekly meetings.
- In collaboration with USAMRIID leadership, author or coauthor research proposals, solicitations, and other vehicles to solicit financial support to meet USAMRIID mission/portfolio objectives. This includes answering service calls from government sponsors (e.g. DTRA).
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports, standard operating procedures, and manuscripts relating to their research efforts. Present results in written and oral format publicly and internally as requested.
Minimum Requirements:
- Masters degree or higher in molecular biology or related field
- 3 years of experience in cell biology and immunology
- Experience in BSL-2 laboratory or higher
- Experience generating 3D printed tissues
- Experience with animal models
- Experience with immunofluorescence, plaque assays, ELISA, etc
- Active BPRP and/or CS-PRP status preferred
- Must pass NACI background check
- Must be eligible to enroll in the BPRP and CS-PRP programs
