Position Summary:
USAMRIID, located at Fort Detrick, Maryland, works closely with other U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC) organizations, Department of Defense (DoD), the Interagency (including Interagency Laboratories), and private companies to accomplish its mission of protecting the Warfighter from biological threats and being prepared to investigate disease outbreaks or threats to public health. This includes conducting Research, Development, Testing, & Evaluation (RDTE) of medical countermeasure against biological threats and the safety, quality assurance, project management, and core support required for these research activities.
The Molecular Biology Division works to combat biological threats and weapons of mass destruction by developing high-throughput sequencing and protein profiling to identify emerging pathogens. It also evaluates and improves medical countermeasures, follows the DoD's roadmap for their development, and ensures their ethical use, including FDA approval. The Division also explores expanding indications and combinations with existing countermeasures.
The Immunology Staff Scientist shall serve as a Lead Investigator and conduct basic and applied research on specified bacterial threats, in support of the BD and infectious disease program. The Contractor will work in BSL-3 laboratories and handle controlled substances thus must hold and maintain BPRP and CS-PRP status, IAW the provisions in this contract and applicable regulations. This position is contingent upon contract award.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assist in designing, conducting, and analyzing complex experiments with the goal of characterizing the immune response to 1) bacterial pathogens, 2) medical-countermeasures designed to combat threat-specific disease, and 3) medical countermeasures designed to combat threat-agnostic disease.
- Present 2 research findings/presentations at lab meetings, attend 23 lab meetings; and attend up to 2 scientific meetings or symposia per year, as required.
- Complete 4 quarterly reports and 1 annual progress report for DTRA as requested.
- Prepare/assist in preparing multiple manuscripts for publication per year.
- Use computer to analyze data, prepare graphs, compute statistics, and write lab notes and reports.
- Conduct animal experiments to better understand bacterial pathogenesis and the host immune response and design vaccines and therapeutics.
- Perform approximately 20 ELISpot assays per year.
- Perform approximately 20 Luminex/Magpix assays per year.
- Run approximately 100 ELISAs per year.
- Plan and assist in approximately 5 animal experiments per year.
- Analyze approximately 200 animal immune profiles per year (e.g., flowcytometry, in vitro stimulation assays, etc.).
- Prepare BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs for Safety, Biosecurity and CDC inspections 4 per year.
- Assist in 3 animal protocols conducted by other investigators.
- Complete approximately 50 bacterial opsonization assays to evaluate experimental vaccines.
- Conduct Equipment Inventory Management twice a year in BSL-2 and BSL-3.
- Perform monthly Laboratory Management to include safety functions and chemical inventory.
- Provide 1 Immunological Scientific Support monthly report to the TPOC by the last working day of the month. Report will include materials and methods, data and data analysis and should be updated monthly.
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in Immunology, Vaccinology, or related field
- Experience in BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs
- Experience and comfortable with animal experiments
- Active BPRP and/or CS-PRP status preferred
- Must pass NACI background check
- Must be eligible to enroll in the BPRP and CS-PRP programs
