Position Summary :
USAMRIID, located at Fort Detrick, Maryland, works closely with other U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC) organizations, Department of Defense (DoD), the Interagency (including Interagency Laboratories), and private companies to accomplish its mission of protecting the Warfighter from biological threats and being prepared to investigate disease outbreaks or threats to public health. This includes conducting Research, Development, Testing, & Evaluation (RDTE) of medical countermeasure against biological threats and the safety, quality assurance, project management, and core support required for these research activities.
The Diagnostic Systems Division (DSD) provides reference diagnostic and disease assessment consultation within the medical community in support of DoD operational requirements. DSD supports analytical studies for advanced development and FDA clearance of diagnostic assays as well as pre-clinical studies of vaccine and therapeutic candidates. The division is functionally organized into four departments : Developmental Diagnostics, Applied Diagnostics, Operational Diagnostics, and Regulated Products.
The Technical Manager will oversee and coordinate the activities of technical staff within an accredited laboratory, ensuring compliance with standards and providing expert technical guidance for laboratory functions. The role includes managing laboratory processes, maintaining a microbial culture collection, supporting research efforts, and ensuring a safe, secure, and effective work environment. The Technical Manager will also assist with process improvement initiatives, maintain laboratory procedures, and provide training to staff. This position is contingent upon contract award.
Duties / Responsibilities :
- Coordinate and oversee daily activities of technical staff performing functions in support of the accredited laboratory environment.
- Provide expert technical guidance and conduct all BRMR (Biological Risk Management and Research) procedures in support of accredited laboratory functions, including managing assays, microbial culture collections, and sample distributions (800-1200 assays per year).
- Assist the BRMR Laboratory Director / PI with process improvement initiatives, typically providing consultation daily.
- Maintain a safe and secure accredited laboratory environment, ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.
- Support diagnostic mission and / or scientific research through CONUS / OCONUS travel as required for training or presenting research.
- Safely work in BSL-2, BSL-3, and / or BSL-4 laboratories, adhering to all safety protocols.
- Train and competency assess Division personnel on laboratory practices, procedures, and techniques to ensure effective performance and compliance.
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and manuscripts relating to ongoing research.
- Assist suite supervisor and perform suite supervisor duties, including managing laboratory instruments, chemicals, ordering supplies, performing preventative maintenance, revising suite-specific manuals, conducting orientations, and coordinating personnel within the laboratory.
