Description

SUMMARY: The Automotive Mechanic position maintains vehicular equipment operation by completing inspections and preventive maintenance requirements; repairing vehicle deficiencies; making adjustments and alignments; keeping records.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide technical service to vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform general and detailed repair of all trucks, engines and components.
  • Overhaul gas or diesel engines.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical issues that may include wheel-end assemblies, electrical systems, suspensions, A/C, or engine components
  • Install injectors, pistons, liners, cam shafts, cylinder heads, rod and main bearings, oil pans, clutches, fan hubs, differentials, fifth wheels, brakes, change or recharge batteries, and replace transmissions and other parts.
  • Read job order, observe and listen to vehicle in operation to determine malfunction and plan work procedures.
  • Examine protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on trucks, and make adjustments as needed.
  • Lubricate moving parts and drive repaired vehicle to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Tag all warranty parts and returns to supplier
  • Attend training classes as required to keep abreast of technical changes.
  • Other Duties as assigned

Requirements

EDUCATION:

Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.

Technical or vocational training preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

Must have at least two - five (2-5) years vehicle and engine repair experience for both diesel and gas engines.

SKILLS:

Must have the following skills and/or abilities:

  • In depth knowledge of the maintenance and repair of vehicles and motors with both diesel and gas engines
  • In depth knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of state and federal safety and environmental rules and regulations in assigned areas.
  • Working knowledge of computer software used to create and track work orders for mechanical maintenance.
  • Strong ability to read and understand maintenance/operations manuals for equipment specifications parts and procedures in order to make proper and timely repairs.
  • Advanced mechanical skills.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Strong planning, organizational, delegation, and time management skills in order to set priorities and meet assigned deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to develop feasible realistic solutions to problems, recommending actions designed to prevent problems from occurring, and resolving escalated issues when necessary.
  • Strong knowledge of and adherence to company and OSHA safety guidelines applicable to the work to include maintaining up-to-date safety knowledge.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Must have a current Texas driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. (CDL is a plus)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to perform the following physical activity on a frequent to constant basis:

  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Lift 40–60 lbs. with or without assistance.
  • Repeatedly use fingers and hands to grasp, handle, install, position, and move materials and manipulate tools; or to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or equipment to exact positions.
  • Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information through verbal communications in person or detect objects in and around job site.
  • Average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents; operate various types of machinery and handheld equipment.
  • Walk short distances on slippery, even, and/or uneven surfaces.
  • Stand, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, turn, or crawl.
  • Climb and balance on stairs, metal/wooden beams, ladders, or other structures/elevated areas.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work primarily at job site performing work in outdoor weather conditions with exposure to extreme cold, heat, and noise depending upon project site; and may also include the following:
  • dust, fumes, cleaning chemicals, and/or other harsh/hazardous solvents or disinfectants
  • electrical components, power lines, or other electrical hazards
  • rebar, blades, or other sharp objects/tools
  • high elevations, trenches, or crawl spaces
  • Possible travel locally during the work day between jobsites, although some out-of-area travel may be expected with seldom overnight travel.
  • Work irregular hours to include nights and weekends.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to:

  • Actively search for equipment issues, document and perform routine, quarterly, and annual maintenance via the equipment manual.
  • Follow to and enforce all applicable company, state and federal safety and environmental rules and regulations in assigned areas.
  • Adhere to and perform functions according to company and OSHA safety guidelines.
  • Work in a cooperative team environment.
  • Maintain clean and orderly work area.
  • Adhere to the highest standards of ethics, integrity, professionalism, and discretion.
  • Support a culture of customer satisfaction.
  • Follow and exchange basic instructions, information, and guidelines.
  • Make independent decisions based on experience or knowledge with minimal supervision.
  • Direct, instruct, and demonstrate procedures and techniques to helpers or other crew members to cross-train and/or develop skills and abilities.
  • Participate in training and development opportunities offered to maintain knowledge of current practices and safety knowledge.
  • Communicate and comprehend instructions/directions in accordance with safety requirements, which necessitate no language barriers exist between employees and supervisors.
  • Wear personal protective equipment as required such as steel toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, vest, and the like while conducting job site visits.
  • Maintain regular, timely, and predictable attendance.
