What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recovery Peer Specialist position at Kimmie’s Recovery Zone?
The Certified Recovery Peer Specialist (CRPS) is responsible for providing outreach, assistance and support to individuals wanting recovery from mental health and/or substance use disorders. The CRPS participates in a comprehensive system of care within the recovery community, and works collaboratively with others in the system to provide hope, support, skills and strategies for personal recovery.
The CRPS assists individuals and their families in defining goals for recovery and developing an action plan to help them reach their goals. This includes developing, maintaining and/or coordinating arrangements for social supports/services, referral to other community, advocacy, and access to treatment and other self-help services.
The CRPS must be knowledgeable in the principles of psycho-social rehabilitation and positive behavior support, including Motivational Interviewing, Illness Management and Recovery, Supported Employment and Supported Education Models. They must also be familiar with peer support resources and recovery approaches; be able to effectively engage individual's psychiatric/substance use disorder services and/or community resources; and have experience in community outreach and engagement.
The CRPS is responsible for staying informed on new initiatives in the peer support field and making recommendations to the recovery team regarding services and resources to better meet the needs of the recovery community. The CRPS must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be a self-starter. Strong motivational, interpersonal and related skills are required, as is the ability to provide support to volunteers and other peers.
