King County's Department of Local Services (DLS) is currently recruiting for a temporary Seasonal jack of all trades Traffic Signal Technician. This position will provide both electrical construction and electronics support to the Roads Maintenance Section. The responsibilities of this position include, installing, maintaining, and repairing traffic signal and street lighting systems, conducting field observations, and using your strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot equipment issues. About The Department
King County is the local service provider for the roughly quarter-million people who live in the unincorporated areas of the county; taken together, Unincorporated King County would be the second-largest city in the state. The Department of Local Services includes a Director's Office with a Community Service Area group, and the Road Services and Permitting Divisions. Together, this department provides a single executive point of accountability for delivery of local services to all of the unincorporated areas.
The King County Road Services Division designs, builds, operates and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated areas of King County in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner to protect the public's investment and facilitate safe travel. The division is committed to ensuring the county's transportation system is safe and efficient for all uses and modes of travel. The Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road and 182 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs, 78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.
Job Duties

ELECTRICAL CONSTRUCTION (outside Signal Tech)
Practical Test/Interviews All In One Day
Those candidates who pass the initial screening will be invited to participate in an outdoor practical exam and interview. Candidates will have up to one and a half hours to complete the practical and interview process. Only those who pass the practical assessment will move forward to the interview. We anticipate this process taking place the week of April 1st, 2025. To ensure you are fully prepared, you will need to: dress appropriately for outdoor conditions, including weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear and be ready for physical tasks relevant to the role.

This recruitment is open to all qualified applicants and in additional to filling one (1) Short-Term Temporary or Special Duty (SDA) Assignment, it may be used to fill current and or/future short-term temporary, and or/special duty positions over the next six months.
Special duty opportunities are open only to current King County career service employees who have completed their initial probation. Special duty applicants must have approval from their current supervisor to accept an assignment. Current employees selected for special duty will be compensated based upon the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement, King County Personnel Guidelines, or Coalition Labor Agreement for their base assignment.

Overtime hours, weekends, and holidays vary upon business demand, season and weather.

This position has been designated First Responder - Employees who, in the early stages of an incident, are responsible for protecting and preserving life, property, evidence, the environment, and restoring order.
Unless otherwise directed by the County Executive, department director or agency head, all employees, regardless of designation, are expected to report to work or request leave during an emergency or inclement weather.

ELECTRICAL CONSTRUCTION (outside Signal Tech)
- Install, maintain, repair and inspect traffic signal and street lighting systems that includes:
- Repair and maintain wood and steel poles, energized overhead and underground cable, conduit and wiring system.
- Replace lamps, clean and adjust optical components of signal displays and inspect traffic signal hardware, wiring and cabling.
- Install wood poles, spanwires, cables and conductors and electrical service equipment.
- Install underground conduit and junction boxes.
- Troubleshoot street lighting systems.
- Document all work and equipment repairs and changes.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Conduct field observations, maintain system databases, and oversee performance.
- Respond to complaints about malfunctioning traffic signals.
- Perform underground signal and streetlight locates.
- Perform preventive maintenance on traffic signals and flashers.
- Repair electronic signal and small electronic equipment for other departments.
- Record all work activities, equipment repairs and modifications.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Experience installing, maintaining, repairing, and inspecting traffic signal and street light systems.
- Familiarity with safety protocols and best practices for working with electrical systems and traffic control devices.
- Knowledge of electronic components and systems used in traffic signals and street lighting.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and address issues with traffic control devices.
- Proficiency in performing preventive maintenance on traffic signals and flashers.
- Ability to work in a team environment and independently without direct supervision.
- Ability to work effectively with others in a work environment that embraces and encourages diversity in its workforce and where differences are valued.
