The Facilities Management Division (FMD) is looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and dependable leader to join the Building Operations Section as a Lead Utility Worker. The Utility Worker team is responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and equipment operation duties not associated with journey-level work in any skilled trade.
Who is the Facilities Management Division – Building Operations?
Through a workforce of over 300 dedicated employees, the FMD operates and manages the County's capital assets by developing and maintaining cost-conscious, sustainable, high-quality facilities, and environments. The Building Operations Section of FMD maintains approximately 3 million square feet in facilities where King County provides regional services, including the King County Courthouse and District Courts, Maleng Regional Justice Center, King County Administration Building, King County Animal Shelter, and several Public Health facilities. Our facilities range in age from 8 to 100 years, with equipment such as boilers, chillers, DDC controls, ventilation fans, pumps and compressors, and fire/life/safety systems.

Job Duties
The successful candidate at a minimum will demonstrate skill and ability to:
- Prioritize, schedule, assign, and oversee the work of other crew members, including custodians.
- Train subordinate staff and perform administrative duties.
- Follow-up with Supervisor on the work performed by the crew to evaluate performance and resolve any issues.
- Assist with timesheet review and completion of other necessary paperwork.
- Perform facilities maintenance related functions such as:
- Tenant moves/relocations Landscape maintenance Custodial duties.
- Providing support to journey level trade workers who perform carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.
- Operate power tools.
- Assist in performing minor maintenance and repairs to facilities, grounds and structures, including periodic preventative maintenance and inspection, and repairs resulting from vandalism and emergencies.
- Maintain daily logs and complete work requests on assignments.
- Assist in the construction, and/or remodel of simple County structures.
- Safely drive variety of vehicles to and from different locations throughout King County Load and drive various types of trucks including dump and box trucks.
- Lift, carry, move office furniture and equipment using moving equipment as well as manually.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Possess three years of experience performing the work of a Utility Worker II or a closely related field and are able to work independently and with the team.
- Have demonstrated skills in a leadership role; giving direction, planning and coordinating the work of others and at least one year experience.
- Have predictable and reliable attendance.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
- Effectively communicating with the public and tenants, this includes internal and external to King County.
- Have experience providing training to staff.
- Have problem-solving skills.
- Have skills in using a computer, specifically Maximo and Microsoft Outlook.
- Have experience in practicing and administering basic safety procedures.
- Have experience estimating materials and labor needed to complete assigned work or projects.
- This position is overtime eligible. The employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday with a standard workweek of 40 hours.
- The work schedule is typically Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
- This position will primarily be based out of Downtown Seattle. Location assignment is subject to change based on operational needs. The position could temporarily or permanently be stationed out of the Maleng Regional Justice Center (MRJC) located in Kent, WA.
- This position is represented by the Teamsters L117, Joint Units Agreement.
- This position is designated as First Responder which means this position has a role in emergency response and responsible for the protection and preservation of life, property, evidence, environment, and/or the restoration of order.
- Candidates must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License and the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner.
- Driving is a regular job function of this position - a five year Washington State Complete Driver's Abstract will be required.
- Final appointment is contingent upon acceptable driving history and successfully passing the fingerprint-based criminal history check and a pre-employment physical examination.
