Summary

Position Summary

Department of Public Health - Seattle & King County's Mobile Medical team is hiring for a Medical Assistant who'll be responsible for assisting health care providers in the Public Health Mobile Medical Program. This position will have an explicit focus on supporting clinical efforts at the REACH Markham building as the result of a new collaboration between REACH and PHSKC to enhance clinical capacity on site at the Markham.

This position is 0.8 FTE with the potential for increased FTE to meet business needs. The incumbent will work as a paraprofessional performing delegated patient care functions under the clinical direction of a Physician, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) or Registered Nurse and under the supervision of a site manager or Personal Health Services Supervisor (PHSS). Medical Assistants work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary clinic team; perform administrative support duties; conduct education and outreach activities; research various topics and information; and are expected to regularly adapt their role / tasks to maximize clinic efficiency and flow.

Additional duties vary depending on need but can include sexual and reproductive health; immunizations; phlebotomy; medication administration; intramuscular and subcutaneous injections; data entry into tracking system; medication inventory; lab QC; and clinical supply management (stocking, checking expiration dates, etc.). This position covers work on our all of our Mobile Medical Programs. All our clinics serve people experiencing homelessness with medical and mental health complexity and social vulnerability. The multidisciplinary teams may include public health physicians, ARNPs, Public Health Nurses, behavioral health specialists, interpreters, and admin staff. Our teams provide core, client-centered support to patients across our program.

Work Schedule

The typical schedule will be 0.8 FTE (32 hours weekly) and hours will vary and will depend upon the assigned clinic. Shifts may vary based on clinical coverage needed. A typical work week is Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Incumbents typically work 8 hours shifts, Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday. Some evening hours will be required. This position is fully benefited and overtime eligible.

This position is Non-Exempt and subject to the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Work Location

Works in various locations throughout King County as part of the Street Medicine team, but based out of 7272 W Marginal Wy S, Seattle, WA 98108.

Job Duties

  • Assist primary care providers and nurses with patient care.
  • As directed by a Physician and / or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, perform and process blood draws, administer medication and collect specimens.
  • Provide basic health care messages and education on a variety of health maintenance and prevention topics including information regarding reproductive health, emergency contraception and pregnancy options, including abortion referral.
  • Monitor, request, stock, and clean routine clinic supplies; maintain safety and cleanliness of examination / treatment rooms and laboratory areas. This may include some bending, lifting, reaching, stooping, and moving objects weighing 35 pounds
  • Interview and accurately record client's medical and social history, vital signs and lab results.
  • Assist with supply management including clinical supply stocking, checking expiration dates, etc.
  • As directed by a Physician and / or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, phone in prescriptions to pharmacies, schedule follow-up appointments and refer patients for specialty and / or follow-up care as needed.
  • Utilize clinic practice management software to assist with scheduling, registering, and checking in patients for appointments.
  • Attend training and respond to emergency situations within the clinic supporting health care providers and emergency personnel.
  • Perform pre-visit planning activities, attend huddles.
  • Assist with procedures.
  • Administer vaccines and single dose medications via the following routes : oral, subcutaneous, intradermal, intramuscular, intranasal.
  • Preform phlebotomy. Perform CLIA waived lab tests.
  • Document in EPIC.
  • Shared duty to drive the outreach vehicles from the office to various locations throughout King County
  • Perform monthly medication inventory and lab quality control procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Work is conducted in a variety of locations including indoors in office, on a vehicle, and outdoors. Travel throughout King County to various locations where unsheltered people are living is required. Outreach work is conducted in uncontrolled outdoor environments and will require the employee to traverse over uneven surfaces and obstacles, ascend and descend slopes, and move through wooded areas without maintained trails while transporting gear weighing up to 35lbs.

The employee will frequently work in and around extreme heat and cold, precipitation, ambient smoke, loud noises, individuals who are distressed, intoxicated, or displaying unpleasant behavior, and potentially biohazardous material. Must constantly perceive surroundings for and communicate with team about potential hazards under these conditions. Appropriate training and PPE will be provided.

Must be able to communicate clearly and quickly with team members and clients in English and be responsive to phone calls and messages throughout the day. Must remain calm in adverse conditions and respond appropriately to emergency situations as they arise following established safety protocols. Employee may be called upon to administer naloxone and / or provide BLS care to individuals in emergency situations, alone or as a member of a team. Employee will be required to share responsibility for driving the outreach vehicle(s) up to 60 miles per day in all weather conditions.

The employee will also be required to move boxes, supplies, and packs weighing up to 35lbs between ground level and 5ft to load and unload outreach supplies.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Our ideal candidate will demonstrate the following (Required) :

  • Must have Medical Assistant Certification (C-MA) with Washington Department of Health.
  • Documentation of current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification with AED training required at time of hire. CPR / AED Heartsaver courses do not meet this requirement.
  • Current valid Washington state driver's license or ability to travel within the Seattle and King County region.
