Exciting news!  WTD's Resource Recovery Unit is looking for a career service Climate, Energy & Sustainability Supervisor.

About the Role:
This is an opportunity to lead an innovative team of ~10 sustainability, energy, and project management subject matter experts in the WTD Climate, Energy and Sustainability work group. The person in this position will play a key role in implementation of the 2025 King County Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP) and the incorporation of sustainability and energy efforts into capital projects and operations and maintenance Specifically, this person will advance work and support staff advancing work on SCAP commitments related to greenhouse gas emissions reduction. The person in this role will represent the Energy and Sustainability Programs on WTD Capital Program Leadership Advisory Teams and in WTD long-term strategic planning and policy deverloment efforts.

The Resource Recovery Unit strives to bring valuable resources, technology, and sound business practices together to deliver products and programs that inspire our customers to be part of an environmentally sustainable future—today. It is responsible for ensuring safe, environmentally friendly products are made from an urban renewable waste stream including, Loop® biosolids soil amendment, recycled water, and renewable energy, as well as managing programs including sustainability, energy, technology assessment, and nutrient management.
 
The Climate, Energy and Sustainability work group includes the Energy and Sustainability Programs. This team is focused on development and implementation of King County sustainability and energy policies, including the King County (SCAP) and Green Building Ordinance (GBO). Work performed by the team includes efforts to increase energy efficiency, production and use of renewable power, green building, use of low-embodied carbon construction materials, and construction and demolition waste diversion in WTD operations and capital projects.

This position performs work remotely and onsite.

What You Will Be Doing:
  • Supervise work unit of ~10 staff, including project managers, energy engineers, and sustainability specialists in WTD’s Climate, Energy and Sustainability work group.
  • Oversee and provide strategic direction for implementation of energy and sustainability program work plans and strategic plans.
  • Hire staff, manage employee performance, and support employee development.
  • Lead development, implementation, and monitoring of the work group’s annual work plan and budget.
  • Engage in division strategic planning and policy development efforts to drive commitments to energy efficiency, the production and use of renewable energy, and green building, operations, and maintenance practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications You Bring:
  • Experience supervising or leading teams.
  • Experience developing and implementing environmental initiatives and code requirements, such as the King County Strategic Climate Action Plan and Green Building Ordinance. Experience tracking performance and compliance.
  • Experience developing and implementing new processes and procedures to meet business needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Communication skills (oral and written); skill in communicating technical and other information effectively to a diverse audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people to solve problems.

Required Licenses: 
  • Washington State Driver's License.
It Would Be Great if You Also Bring:
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency and renewable energy as it relates to wastewater conveyance and treatment.
  • Knowledge of green building principles, the WTD Sustainable Infrastructure Scorecard, and third-party sustainability certifications.
  • Working knowledge of the King County SCAP, including development and implementation of WTD SCAP commitments.
  • Experience with capital project design and delivery.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and resource recovery.

Working Conditions: 

Remote and Onsite Work Details: Employees in this role work remotely from a home location, with onsite reporting requirements typically three to four times per month. The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly. Onsite reporting locations may be at various King County worksites including the collaboration space at King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104). This work arrangement promotes work-life-balance and reduces carbon footprint under the department’s vision.  

Requirement: Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance to King County worksites to meet onsite reporting requirements.  

 Work Schedule: This position is exempt from the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is not overtime eligible. 

 Union Representation: This position is represented by the Teamster, Local 117. Pursuant to Article 14.4 Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust $1.00 per hour from the base wage will be submitted to the Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust Fund.
