We have an exciting opporunity for a Government Relations Assistant to join the External Affairs team in the Director's Office. This position will report to the DCHS Chief of Staff.

WORK SCHEDULE/CONDITIONS:
This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm. This position meets the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible with supervisory pre-approval. This position is not represented by a union.

MISSION CRITICAL POSITION STATUS:
This position has been designated Non-Mission Critical. Unless otherwise directed by the County Executive, department director or agency head, all employees, regardless of designation, are expected to report to work or request leave during an emergency or inclement weather. REMOTE AND ONSITE WORK DETAILS:
Employees in this role work remotely from a home location, with onsite reporting requirements. The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly.

REMOTE WORK LOCATION REQUIREMENT: Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance of King County worksites to meet onsite reporting requirements.

Job Duties

  • Compose, draft, summarize, prepare, proofread and/or edit documents, letters of agreement, or correspondence to ensure these conform to King County standards and style established in the department.
  • Manage administrative and scheduling support for the Director, Deputy Director, Chief of Staff, and the broader government relations team, including organizing and coordinating meetings and appointments between the department and key internal and external staff and elected officials.
  • Coordinate and prepare briefing materials, agendas, and background information for leadership in External Affairs and the Director’s Office.
  • Stay informed about policy issues and transmittals before the King County Council.
  • Provide and/or acquire authoritative program-specific information relating to assigned specialized or technical administrative support services that require interpreting established policies, procedures, codes, regulations, and other relevant sources to internal and/or external customers over the telephone, in writing and/or in person.
  • Oversee management of internal documentation and record management for the External Affairs team.
  • Maintain, inventory, order, collect and distribute supplies and/or equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Over two years of progressively responsible work experience involving public administration and/or analysis, or related fields in the public or nonprofit sectors.
  • Experience in administrative assistance, communications, customer service, government relations, or other relevant experience in a professional capacity
  • Experience working for an elected official, executive, or director
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, track projects, and accomplish objectives with minimal supervision or oversight
  • Willingness and capacity to attend community meetings, forums, and town halls in the evenings or on weekends
  • Skill in maintaining confidentiality
  • Knowledge of Microsoft 365 software applications and technical skills; proficient (minimum of intermediate skill level) in Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams, and SharePoint
  • Skill in prioritizing workload and adapting to changes in demands
