What are the responsibilities and job description for the Judicial Technician III - Floater Bailiff position at King County?
The responsibilities of the Judicial Technician III (Floater Bailiff) include performing a variety of job-related duties as a temporary replacement in support of the daily operations of the Court. Work assignments may require specialized or technical knowledge in several areas of court operations. The incumbent provides analytical support on operational issues, maintains databases, and performs a wide range of support duties where needed within the department. When covering in a court, the incumbent acts as the contact person for the judges and communicates technical and sensitive information to attorneys, litigants, jurors, court personnel, agencies, law enforcement, media, and the public regarding case information, court procedures, and other matters related to the operations of the department.

Work location: This position performs work onsite and is based in the King County Courthouse, in downtown Seattle, Washington. The incumbent will be required to work at other Superior Court locations as assigned, including the Children and Family Justice Center and the Involuntary Treatment Court at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, and other locations.
Work schedule and terms: This is a full-time, benefit-eligible position working a 35-hour work week. The work week is normally Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Variations from these hours may occur based on the needs of the Court. This position is non-exempt (hourly) from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and overtime-eligible.

This classification encompasses assignments in various divisions of Court Operations. No one position is responsible for all listed duties, nor are the duties listed representative of the entire functional capacity of the position at the task level.
- Responsible for the management of caseloads and determining trial readiness of cases set for trial. Prepare and distribute reports, and notify attorneys, litigants, court personnel, and other parties on the reassignment of cases for trial. Inform attorneys and parties of case status and provide legal resources, policies, and procedures for non-compliance per court policy.
- Monitor cases; schedule hearings, track motions and conferences. Prepare and distribute calendars for judges and other court personnel for inter-department purposes; maintain a judge's calendar. Coordinate with courts regarding the reassignment of cases, transmit documents to the appropriate court, and synchronize notice to all parties of trial setting details. Assemble records and reference materials for cases for review.
- Direct and assist jurors during trials by acting as the Court's liaison for questions and concerns while complying with and applying appropriate statutes, court rules, policies, and procedures. This may involve multiple jury panels and video-conferenced jury selection.
- Assess the need for extra security measures and advise the appropriate law enforcement agency.
- May be required to perform legal research and analysis, and prepare legal correspondence, memoranda, court orders, and jury instructions. This includes drafting, preparing, proofreading, and editing of those legal documents.
- Use the court's civil and criminal case management system and domestic case reports and applications to manage all pending cases in the judge's individual caseload. Update and maintain accurate databases. Use a wide variety of software programs to manage a judge's department.
- Research, interpret, and comprehend policies, procedures, state and local court rules, statutes, and other relevant sources to provide information relating to specialized or technical services for internal and/or external customers over the phone, in writing, and or in person.
- Process mail, email, voicemail, motions, legal pleadings and submissions, legal files, and requests from the judge. Provide copies of court orders to parties and counsel.
- May train new bailiffs.
- Perform any other position related duties required by the judge or the supervisor.
Knowledge of human behavior and conflict resolution techniques. Familiar with basic safety, emergency, and first aid procedures. High level of skill in maintaining confidential information; oral and written communications, including public speaking; technical writing; interpersonal and human relations and ability to work with a diverse client population, including internal staff and other stakeholders, and external customers. Must be willing and able to work in a team environment. Must be proficient with various computer software applications including Microsoft Office programs and database management. Must have knowledge of and ability to learn specialized software applications.
