About the Role:
This is the third level within a three level Wastewater Process Engineer classification series. The successful candidate will perform a variety of advanced level engineering duties. The candidate will develop, plan and direct process feasibility studies to improve unit process performance. The candidate will research new equipment and chemicals. The Wastewater Process Engineer will also support capital project review/implementation, energy and chemical conservation initiatives, and the completion of regulatory tasks and reports. The Wastewater Process Engineer will become an expert on the plant’s permits (e.g., Municipal Wastewater, Puget Sound Nutrient, Industrial Stormwater, Reclaimed Water, and air permits) and help convey the requirements to plant leadership, operators, and maintenance workers.

This role performs all job duties onsite.

  • Act as the technical engineering expert in process equipment, systems, and processes.
  • Develop engineering plans and specifications; prepare project scope of work and pre-design criteria to ensure compatibility with existing facilities, equipment, and acceptable process control standards.
  • Review and evaluate start-up and commissioning procedures for new equipment.
  • Research projects to optimize existing plant processes to ensure maximum performance and cost-effective operation.
  • Serve as client representative for capital projects and perform start-up work associated with these projects. Prepare progress reports, project proposals and technical reports.
Qualifications You Bring:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in an engineering field, or equivalent combination of education and experience, in a physical science, engineering field, and/or wastewater, ranging from certificate programs through doctorate degrees and post graduate work.  
  • Skill in oral and written communication techniques and principles and to apply this skill to read, write and follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Skill in working on multiple projects and assignments simultaneously and coordinating among diverse workgroups.
  • 12 years of professional wastewater working experience, at municipal treatment plants, wastewater consulting firms, education/research institutions, and/or industrial manufacturers with on-site treatment plants. 
  • Computer proficiency, as measured through familiarity with and use of general software (Microsoft suite applications such as Teams, Outlook, and Excel) and/or through familiarity with and use of industry specific software (e.g., Lab Information Management Systems, Distributed Control Systems, Water Information Systems, and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems). 

Required Licenses or Certification:
  •  Professional Engineer license (PE) and/or a Washington State Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Group IV certificate (or ability to obtain in 12 months).
Working Conditions:
  • Work Location: West Point Treatment Plant 1400 Discovery Park Blvd, Seattle, WA 98199, USA
  • Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week with flexible schedules. This position is not covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not overtime eligible. 
  • Union Representation: This position is represented by S.E.I.U L925.
