For Special Duty Assignment interest, you must be a Career Service, Career Service Exempt or other regular (non-temporary) employee in King County who has completed their initial County probation. You must have supervisor approval prior to taking a Special Duty Assignment.
This Special Duty is currently anticipated to last through November 30, 2025. However, funding sources for this work remain uncertain and dependent upon decisions actively being made at both the federal and local levels. As a result, the end date of this position may be adjusted based on those decisions.Summary Public Health – Seattle and King County values diverse perspectives and life experiences. The Office of the Director in Public Health-Seattle & King County (Public Health) is seeking a highly organized, collaborative, and equity-centered Project/Program Manager III who will bring their lived experiences, technical knowledge, and project management expertise to lead two critical, cross-departmental projects. These projects support staff and King County communities to achieve health and well-being. It also supports the department in seeking public health accreditation, and in achieving objectives in the department’s 2024-2029 strategic plan. The first project will culminate in a departmental workforce development plan. The second project is King County’s Community Health Improvement Plan and associated partnership activities. Working simultaneously on both projects, this position will lead the day-to-day coordination, engagement, implementation, materials development, communications and project management of these projects. The position will work closely with both the Policy and Strategy and the Human Resources teams in the Office of the Director, in a matrix supervision format. The Office of the Director leads in the implementation of Public Health’s mission to promote and improve the health and well-being of all people in King County by leading with racial equity and changing systems and structures that impact health.

- Equity and Anti-Racism: Ensure that an anti-racist approach is centered in project activities.
- Project Management: Lead the development and organization of the project charter, schedule, scope, resources, and communication. Coordinate and monitor tasks across stakeholders and identify opportunities to provide support for team members to ensure project success. Provide regular updates to team members and departmental leadership, identify and elevate risks to successful implementation. Develop budget, track expenses, and propose revisions as needed. Convene, engage, and lead staff and community partner teams to facilitate project activities. Maintain a high level of organization, collaborative decision-making approach, and consistent follow up on outstanding action items.
- Communication: Propose, coordinate, and implement communication processes to provide regular communication and status updates for both internal and external stakeholders. Use visual systems as well as tools such as SharePoint to manage and organize information. Serve as a point of contact for staff and partner questions.
- Develop materials: Conduct complex analyses, and use findings to prepare agendas, presentations, speaking points, or summaries. Develop meeting notes, reports and conduct presentations for non-technical internal and external audiences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Understanding of and ongoing commitment to learning, understanding, and effective application of anti-racist and equity practices when working with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities, as well as LGBTQ , immigrant/refugee, unhoused, and disability communities.
- Three (3) years of experience managing projects with internal and external partners
- Experience and knowledge of public health systems and functions, including population-based health improvement strategies
- Demonstrated ability to implement a thoughtful and detailed approach to successfully manage complex projects with diverse project teams and effectively communicate across multiple audiences.
- Experience independently planning, managing, coordinating, and tracking projects with many simultaneous components, including developing and managing project management tools and processes.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities that include building effective and accountable teams, managing conflict, creative problem-solving, and making quality decisions which can impact the outcome of the project.
- Demonstrated ability in gathering, analyzing, and presenting information using Office 365 tools including proficiency using SharePoint and Microsoft Teams.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple shifting priorities; ability to work under deadlines while being flexible to changing needs.

- Experience developing performance measurement or visual information management tools.

Work Schedule
This position is Monday-Friday, 8:00-5:00. This position is exempt from overtime.
Some of the work associated with this position will be performed through teleworking and will report to office location and to meetings as needed. Travel to other work locations may be necessary. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. To support employees during this time King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely.
