GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The principal serves as an educational leader, overseeing daily operations, managing budgets, shaping school policies, fostering a safe environment, and collaborating with staff, students, and parents. Their role is pivotal in promoting academic excellence and student success.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Creates a school culture that promotes the ongoing improvement of learning and teaching for students and staff
- Coordinates the school program in alignment with division goals, policies, and procedures
- Provides leadership in all areas of instruction
- Shares leadership responsibilities and duties with assistant principals and other essential building personnel to maintain an orderly and productive day-to-day operation
- Serves as a primary evaluator, conducts informal and formal observations, and provides instructional staff with quality feedback to improve practices
- Promotes and monitors student achievement using student data and other outcome indicators
- Uses student performance data to assess teaching and learning and make appropriate educational decisions to improve instruction, increase student achievement, and elevate overall school, department, and team effectiveness
- Uses collaboration and shared decision-making to build relationships, maintain positive morale, and facilitate effective lines of communication
- Articulates the school mission to the school community and solicits its support
- Manages the planning, budgeting, and staffing for all programs and departments in support of the school’s mission and goals
- Holds oversight responsibilities for all school programs, including co-curricular and extra-curricular activities
- Oversees the development of the comprehensive schedule
- Monitors and prepares school communications as appropriate
- Establishes and promotes a professional learning environment; focuses on continuous growth; and supports ongoing collaboration among teachers, administrators, specialists, and support staff
- Supports school and division employee onboarding and mentoring processes for all new, provisional, and targeted instructional staff
- Involves students, staff, parents, and the community to create and sustain a positive, safe, and healthy learning environment
- Commits to prepare students for their future by building relationships, promoting learning that is rigorous and relevant, and developing each student’s unique talents and skills
- Communicates behavior expectations to students, staff, and parents and provides support and consequences in alignment with the Code of Student Conduct when appropriate
- Assumes the responsibility for the supervision of students during the school day, while being transported to and from school, while going on field trips, and during any activity of function sponsored by the school
- Assumes responsibility for security and appearance of the school building and grounds at all times
- Attends all school meetings, central office meetings, outside agency meetings, and community gatherings as appropriate or directed
- Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with the school division’s policies and practices
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:
- Holds a Master’s Degree or higher
- Holds or is eligible for a Postgraduate Professional License issued by the Virginia Department of Education with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision Pk-12
Preferred Qualifications:- 3 years of successful, full-time experience as an administrator in the area or level of assignment
