Job Title: Operator Heavy Equipment
Department: Base Operations and Support
Job Summary:
This position operates a variety of light and heavy equipment involved in construction and maintenance projects such as rollers, graders, backhoes, front-end loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, or bulldozers. Performs preventive maintenance inspections, routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Performs routine inspection and maintenance on vehicles such as checking oil, water, and tires
- Operates graders for leveling and operates tractors to load materials such as dirt and rocks
- Operates backhoe and front-end loaders as required
- Operates forklifts and dump trucks to transport trash and materials
- Operates various equipment for general site preparation, landscaping, snow removal, and related assignments
- Operates 40-ton trash trucks including hydraulic equipment such as tailgates, hoppers, and packers as required
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
- Inspect large equipment before and after use to ensure they are working properly
- Load and unload cargo and move them to the appropriate storage area
- Follow all safety procedures while operating equipment
- Perform regular maintenance and minor repairs when necessary
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Proficient in written and oral communication skills according to skill requirements
- Possess strong computer skills, able to read, write, and comprehend written instructional documents
- Ability to function well in a high-paced and, at times, stressful environment
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
- Ability to apply concepts of introductory algebra and geometry
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least two years of related experience required
- Understanding of job site safety procedures
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance on a variety of construction class vehicles
- Willingness to work a variety of shifts with 2 weeks' notice
- Willingness to be outside in a variety of extreme weather conditions
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting and operating equipment
- Prolonged period of standing, bending, reaching, and working with hands
- Prolonged periods of exposure to loud noises
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at times
- Ability to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands as necessary
- Ability to hear and see to position and safety requirement levels
- Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, and chemicals
Special Qualifications/Requirements:
- Must be able to pass successfully required, a federal, state, or local government's background investigation
- Valid state driver's license
- Hold any NCCER certification, preferred
