INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT SUBSTITUTE
JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the department manager, serve as an assistant to teachers in a variety of assigned instructional activities to provide appropriate, meaningful learning experiences for pupils in large or small groups, or in one-on-one situations; assist in the supervision of students; perform routine clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel; and do other related work as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Positive methods to maintain control of student behavior;
Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary and grammar;
Basic subjects of instruction including arithmetic, reading and language;
Routine record management systems and procedures.
Ability to:
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with children and adults contacted in the course of work;
Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups;
Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment;
Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Print and write legibly;
Maintain the highest level of confidentiality in all matters relating to students;
Education and Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and/or any combination of experience and training to provide the required knowledge and skill. An AA degree, or 2 years equivalence of acceptable college coursework, or successful passage of an acceptable rigorous assessment is highly preferred.
License, Certificate and Testing Requirements:
Must pass an Instructional Assistant Proficiency Test with a score of 75% or higher in the areas of Math, Reading, and Writing.
Possess a valid California driver license and maintain insurability.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Assist in the creation, preparation, ordering and distribution of materials and supplies;
Work with students, individually or in groups, in instructional activities, as directed by the teacher;
Alert teacher and appropriate staff to the special needs, progress and behavior of students;
Assist in maintaining classroom discipline and an orderly, attractive and positive learning environment;
Assure the health and safety of students, providing supervision in classroom and non-classroom school settings and at school functions;
Correct student school work, tabulate scores and record grades, in accordance with established guidelines;
May work with students who have special needs or in Special Education classrooms;
Perform other related duties, as assigned.
