The Kings County Public Health Department has one current vacancy for a Medical Billing Clerk II. This is an extra-help position, which does not include regular benefits but does accrue sick leave. Temporary employees are paid on an hourly basis and are subject to limitations on weekly and fiscal year work hours.
An eligible list will be established from this recruitment, which may be used to fill future vacancies. The expected life of the eligible list is six months.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Medical Billing Clerk classification series is utilized in the Public Health Department and Behavioral Health Department. Working under the supervision of the Medical Billing Supervisor and in accordance with established procedures, incumbents perform a wide variety of medical billing and collection duties. Medical Billing Clerk I is the entry level classification for incumbents with some general clerical or clerical accounting experience. Incumbents at the I level may expect to advance to the experienced level of Medical Billing Clerk II once minimum qualifications have been met and satisfactory performance has been demonstrated.
Prepare, verify and process a wide variety of medical billing for services provided to patients/clients; perform accurate and timely data entry of codes and other information into electronic billing software programs; perform reconciliation of remittances, post payments to patient/client accounts and research and resolve discrepancies; review records of patient/client visits to determine classifications of coverage to be billed such as private insurance, MediCal/Medicare, governmental health insurance programs, laboratory services, and grant or other special funding sources; verify billing codes, request additional documents or documentation verbally or in writing to process claims, resubmit claim rejections or denials for reconsideration of payment, and follow-up on any unpaid claims; provide information and assistance to other department support staff, supervisors and managers regarding medical coding and billing procedures in order to ensure accurate data is available for medical billing; update patient data and respond to inquiries from patients/clients, insurance companies, state or federal agencies, or health care facilities regarding status of patient accounts; combine and separate accounts to ensure proper pay classifications and correct statement billing; process third-party pay forms, correspondence and bills; submit regular reports to supervisor concerning billing activities and statistics; perform special assignments such as compiling data on number and status of rejections or denials and other statistical data or reports; maintain accurate records of billing documents and documentation; may be assigned other clerical support or back-up duties as needed; attends and participates in regular meetings with supervisor, medical billing unit, and other department personnel.

Level II:
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Level II:
Experience: One year of experience equivalent to a Medical Billing Clerk I with Kings County; OR two years of experience in a hospital, medical office or public health setting preparing and processing electronically-generated medical billing.
