PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assist the special education teacher to provide for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities. Assist in the implementation of classroom programs, personal care needs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Education/Certification: Educational Aide I Paraprofessional Certificate High School Diploma or GED
Special Knowledge/Skills:

? Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills Minimum Experience: Experience working with children/students, parents, or persons with disabilities
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Maintain confidentiality
2. Keep accurate records of students with disabilities and furnish to appropriate personnel in a timely manner
3. Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus duty, playground, and community
4. Assist teacher in maintaining, copying, transferring confidential folders as required Special Education Aide - 2
5. Assist special needs students with individual tasks as may be required including, but not limited to, transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, feeding, bathroom needs, personal hygiene
6. Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention
7. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, emotional, and safety needs through in-service and/or teacher direction
8. Work with and/or prepare materials for individual students or small groups to develop skills through instructional activities under teacher direction
9. Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students
10. Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and legal/local board policies
11. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned EQUIPMENT USED: Copier, facsimile, computer/peripherals, adaptive equipment

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem-solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. May be required to lift or transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making Possible exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling Occasional irregular hours.
Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidents immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
