Position Overview

The 1:1 Aide is specifically responsible for assisting in the supervision and care of a student with special medical needs in the general education setting. The 1:1 aide will assist with supporting the student during the regular school day under the direct supervision of classroom teachers, the School Nurse, and Director of Operations.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Implement all aspects of the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and provide the necessary support and monitoring to help the student manage their identified needs while remaining in the classroom to access learning.
  • Acts as a mandated reporter to ensure the safety of the students.
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives and meeting IEP goals.
  • Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting student needs in the classroom.
  • Implements all aspects of the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and provide the necessary support and monitoring needed to help the student manage their diabetes while remaining in the classroom to access learning. 
  • Assists students to attend to the student’s personal hygiene and care needs.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
  • Communicates with supervising instructional staff, and a variety of health care professionals, and professional support personnel for the purpose of communicating progress or implementing IEP objectives.
  • Escorts student (e.g. bathroom, classroom, community etc.) for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and safe arrival to and/or from a destination.
  • Monitors student’s daily schedule for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Provides, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instruction to the student in a variety of individual and group activities for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans; and ensuring the student’s access to his/her least restrictive environment.
  • Supervises individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. community field trips, hallways, bus loading areas, cafeteria, parking lots, classrooms, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Prepares the learning environment to allow the student to participate in classroom activities.
  • Supervises and escorts the student during any and all emergency drills or during actual emergencies for the purpose of providing a safe learning environment.
  • Attends any problem solving/IEP meeting and provides input as to the student’s progress for the purpose of maintaining a whole student approach to his/her education.
  • Participates in training for the purpose of providing or receiving information and updating skills.

  • Collects data on the student’s IEP goals for the purpose of maintaining accurate records and engaging in data based decision making.
  • Establish, cultivates, and maintains a collaborative relationship with the classroom teachers, the School Nurse and Director of Operations.
  • Partner with the SPED Team to review material taught in class with individual students who require additional support.
  • Lead on monitoring student medical needs and reporting updates to School Nurse.
  • Assist Nurse with providing snack or break for students, along with  problem-solving and making timely solution-focused determinations to meet the needs of the student.
  • Responsible for managing and reducing risk within the classroom with the support of the classroom teachers, the school nurse and Director of Operations and seeking assistance when needed to resolve the matter.  

KIPP Capital Region 

  • Perform other duties outlined by classroom teachers, the School Nurse, and the Director of Operations.
  • Complies with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including those of the NYS Department of Education, Department of Health, and NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
  • Adheres to organization policies and procedures; promotes and supports mission, vision, and values, including developing and participating in internal surveys and data collection for continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Child development educational background or knowledge preferred. 
  • Experience working in a medical facility, nurses office, or diabetes care facility preferred.
  • Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule outside of regular business hours.
  • Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Experience with nursing and/or diabetes care highly preferred

KIPP Capital Region offers a competitive salary ranging from $38,000 - $42,000.  

Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role and longevity within the KIPP network. KIPP Capital Region will evaluate and determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our teacher salary scale at point of hire.
