Position Summary
Reporting to the Chief Schools Officer (CSO, the Deputy Chief Schools Officer (DCSO) is responsible for driving our regional priorities and maintains a laser-focus on continually increasing the number of students who experience joy and achieve academic excellence at our schools. The DCSO will manage a team of School Leader Managers and/or School Leaders, the Director of Special Education and potentially other direct-reports. In this leadership role, the DCSO will ensure all KIPP Northern California Schools are inclusive, community-focused, college-preparatory schools that empower students and parents. The DCSO will support the implementation of our region-wide teaching and learning vision, and drive student academic growth. Committed to disrupting racial and socio-economic inequities in educational access and outcomes, the DCSO will partner with the Chief Schools Officer to support students through college and to career. This is an ideal opportunity for a dynamic and visionary organizational leader with significant people management experience to play a critical role in expanding the impact of a K-12 charter management organization.

Preferred Qualifications

 

Experience:
  • Minimum 4 years School Leader/Principal experience in a K-12 setting.
  • Minimum 2 years managing School Leaders in a K-12 setting.
  • Deep experience in the design, integration, implementation and management of a school including knowledge of curriculum, instructional practices, school operations and management, and leadership development.
  • Direct Special Education experience and/or understanding of CA state & federal laws that apply to special education (highly desired)
  • Demonstrated success leading school improvement initiatives that close student achievement gaps between racial, ethnic, and economic groups.
  • A track record of leading, motivating, and developing diverse and high performing teams.

 

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

 

Attract, Develop, Supervise and Retain Highly Effective School Leader Managers (SLMs) 

 

  • Together with the Chief Schools Officer, share management and supervision responsibilities for a portfolio of School Leader Managers (SLMs). 
  • Set goals and expectations to ensure that the SLM team shares a common vision for how to operationalize the implementation of joyful, academically excellent schools across the TK-12 continuum.
  • Build capacity in SLMs through regular check-ins, on-the-ground observations, and timely, relevant feedback to develop their skills and competencies.
  • Identify and codify the most effective practices for School Leader management. 
  • Regularly review with SLMs and regional leaders a variety of regional student performance data and teacher practice data to quickly identify and address concerns and make immediate adjustments as needed.
  • Hold SLMs accountable for the development, support and results of School Leaders, including implementation of regional priorities; full participation in the School Leader Community of Practice and other regional structures; and compliance with all laws, policies and regulations. 
  • Support SLMs in challenges that arise in school management, e.g. school climate and culture, community engagement, parent involvement, etc. 
  • Liaison with KIPP Foundation to ensure alignment to their “ONE KIPP” Leadership expectations.
  • Directly manage 1-2 School Leaders (as needed).

 

Drive implementation of Teaching and Learning Vision

 

  • Together with the Chief Schools Officer, design, communicate and support high-quality implementation of teaching and learning vision to School and Regional Leaders, overseeing the plan to achieve our instructional vision and drive results, and fostering collaboration between the Lead Learning Team (Teaching & Learning and School Leader Manager teams).
  • Use data to effectively drive instructional practice and, in collaboration with the Chief Schools Officer, improve and adjust academic strategy and program.
  • Regularly co-observe with School Leader Managers and School Leaders to progress monitor implementation of teaching and learning vision and regional priorities. 
  • Align and coordinate supports and services across Academics, School Culture, Special Education and School Leader Manager teams along the Arc of the Year - including monthly Communities of Practice
  • Collaborate with other teams across the Regional Support Office (RSO)to ensure high quality service is delivered from the RSO to schools and help to ensure that School Leaders are able to focus on instructional leadership.
  • Provide the vision for and execution of professional development in the summer and throughout the school year for teachers and appropriate staff.
  • Maintain a cutting-edge awareness of the promising practices and innovations in programs and policies for teaching, learning, and school design that are emerging locally and nationwide.
  • Manage up to 10 additional direct-reports (based on experience and opportunity).

 

Manage Director of Special Education to Drive Outcomes
  • Hold Director accountable for achieving improvements in student outcomes for students with IEPs while ensuring the region remains legally compliant.
  • Support Director in leading a regional support team that delivers support to schools through a customer service lens and proactively gather feedback from relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure Director is formally developing SpEd Team Leaders through structured coaching, data analysis and observations/walkthroughs.
  • Support Director of Special Education in setting a team vision and roadmap aligned to the regional teaching and learning priorities as well as specific department priorities to achieve academic outcomes for students with IEPs.
  • Build capacity in Director through regular check-ins, on-the-ground observations, and timely, relevant feedback to develop their skills and competencies.
  • Ensure Director of Special Education is meeting our compliance metrics in accordance with IDEA, California Ed Code and SELPA guidelines.
  • Work with relevant stakeholders (i.e. Finance team, School Leaders, Human Resources, etc.) to ensure resource allocations policies maximize opportunities for students academic growth.

 

Contribute to a High-Functioning Senior Leadership Team
  • As a member of the senior leadership team, co-create the conditions for high performance and high health across the organization.
  • Partner with the senior leadership team to ensure the necessary systems and structures to effectively communicate, empower effective decision- making, win on our priorities, break down silos, and monitor progress.
  • Set direction for high-impact school support; align and coordinate people and resources cross-functionally to clear obstacles, provide excellent service, and maximize the value proposition of the Regional Support Office.
  • Create proactive systems that garner feedback from stakeholders to inform school support and school improvement strategy and practice.
Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands

 

Physical: Ability to navigate office and school campuses, and hold meetings in different spaces. Traditionally, much of the day involves sitting. Ability to access and utilize technology. Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment 1-5 lbs. Physical agility to move self in various positions in order to execute duties effectively, which may include kneeling, walking, pushing/pulling, squatting, twisting, turning, bending, stooping and reaching overhead

 

Mental: Stress of deadlines and normal work standards, ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, calculate, perform routine math problems, memorize and recall objects and people.

 

Environmental: Office environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions.  Frequent classroom/school environment and travel. Adhere to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies’ recommendations.

 

Classification
This is a full-time, exempt position based on a full year calendar cycle and time off, located in our Regional Support Office with frequent travel to schools and districts.

 

The KIPP Regional Support Office is currently operating in a hybrid fashion. Most positions can expect to work in person 2-3 days per week and remotely the remaining days, subject to change based on the needs of the role.

Compensation
KIPP Northern California is dedicated to you and your family's well-being! We offer a competitive salary as well as a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and transportation benefits.
We benchmark annually against comparably-sized non-profit organizations in the regions where we operate, to offer competitive salaries. The salary range for this position is between $202,000 and $236,000. Most candidates would be compensated at $215,000.
