Job Overview
We are seeking a creative, energetic, and passionate Art Teacher to join our after-school program team at Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club. In this role, you will instruct and engage students from grades K-12 in our fine arts classroom through a variety of artistic mediums, including drawing, painting, and crafts. You will be responsible for organizing lessons, maintaining a safe and well-organized art room, and adapting to accommodate the diverse needs and skill levels of children. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children, a love for the arts, and the ability to manage a classroom of varying ages and interests.
Key Responsibilities
- Lesson Planning & Execution: Develop and organize engaging and age-appropriate art lessons for students in grades K-12, focusing on a range of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, and crafts. Adapt activities to suit varying skill levels and interests across age groups.
- Classroom Management: Maintain a positive and orderly environment in the art room. Effectively manage groups of children (ages 6-17), ensuring safety and encouraging focus and engagement. Use clear instructions and creative methods to keep students on task.
- Material Management: Oversee the organization and upkeep of art supplies and tools, ensuring that the art room is always stocked and ready for each session. Implement sustainable practices in managing materials and cleaning up after projects.
- Collaboration: Work with other staff members to coordinate activities and ensure that the program meets the overall educational and developmental goals of the students.
Qualifications
- Experience: Previous experience working with children (any capacity) required. Experience in teaching, tutoring, or assisting in an after-school or camp setting is a plus. Experience in the arts (visual arts, crafts, or related fields) is highly preferred.
- Skills & Knowledge: Strong proficiency in a variety of art mediums, including drawing, painting, and sculpture. Knowledge of child development and the ability to adapt teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students from different age groups. Ability to lead and manage a group of children, maintaining engagement and focus during activities.
- Personal Traits: Patient, creative, and enthusiastic with a genuine passion for teaching children. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, parents, and team members. A positive, proactive attitude and the ability to think on your feet in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Education:
- A high school diploma is required; a degree or coursework in art education, visual arts, or a related field is preferred but not required.
