    Job Objective:

    Organize, manage, and evaluate the assigned team sport. Work with athletes to improve personal and teamwork skills. Promote school spirit as a vital aspect of the district’s educational mission. Provide guidance, training, and encouragement to help students profit from their investment.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • A valid State of Ohio teaching certificate or license and/or a Coaching Certificate.
    • Meet all current health requirements including a negative tuberculosis test.
    • Evidence of a clear record as determined by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCII).
    • Evidence of coaching, group management and organizational skills.
    • Expertise in the assigned sport.
    • Expertise in motivational, training and conditioning techniques.
    • Completion of sports medicine in-service training as required by law and board policy.
    • Current certification in CPR, First Aid, Concussion Training, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, and Sports Medicine as required by OHSAA
    • Prior head coaching experience preferred
    • Demonstrated sport-specific expertise and knowledge of athlete development
    • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills

    Job Duties, Responsibilities,

    and Essential Functions:

    • Accountable to the Principal, Athletics Director, or Faculty Manager for the organization, promotion, and supervision of the assigned sports team and related activities. Comply with all policies, rules and regulations of the State of Ohio Sports’ Medicine, Ohio High School Athletic Association, Chagrin Valley Conference, and the Kirtland Board of Education.
    • Encourage all students to participate in and/or support the district’s athletic programs. Inform participants of all necessary regulations and responsibilities (e.g., eligibility and academic standards, required forms, physical examination, training regulations, expectations for student conduct, requirements for awards and recognitions, insurance availability, waiver forms, etc.).
    • Demonstrate technical skill, knowledge and coaching proficiency.
    • Develop and carry out a practice schedule. Prepare statistics. Evaluate individual and team performance. Develop and refine game strategies.
    • Instruct athletes in the proper precautions to prevent injuries. Follow approved policies and procedure for emergency medical treatment.
    • Notify the Principal, Athletics Director, or Faculty Manager of special needs or arrangements well before the scheduled activity.
    • Meet with the Athletics Director and Faculty Manager to review athletic programs before the start of the season (e.g., handbooks, schedules, policy and procedure revisions, etc.).
    • Follow district procedure to request replacement of equipment.
    • Promote the proper care of school property, equipment, athletic supplies and other materials. Account for school resources used by athletes, managers and support staff.
    • Oversee the preparation and maintenance of an orderly locker room, practice areas and facilities, etc. Ensure the safe storage of equipment. Make minor equipment repairs.
    • Ensure all financial activities are processed through the Athletic Department or appropriate student activity accounts as required by state law.
    • Attend all mandatory meetings and training programs (e.g., rules interpretation, etc.).
    • Receive questions, requests and complaints. Attend to such matters promptly and tactfully. Encourage suggestions from staff, parents, students, and the public, when appropriate. Avoid public criticism of coaching methods used by other individuals. Offer and accept constructive comments diplomatically.
    • Confirm arrangements for transportation, meals, and accommodations for all personnel participating in games and contests played away from home. Arrange for scorekeeper and/or other necessary personnel at home games.
    • Notify and receive approval of schedule changes from the Athletics Director.
    • Confirm attendance and obtain permission from the Principal to be away when duties conflict with classroom responsibilities.
    • Embrace academic performance as an important priority for all students. Confer with teachers, provide guidance and encouragement to help students achieve academic success. Actively involve parents and colleagues as partners.
    • Consistently provide close supervision of students to ensure their safety wherever they may be. Secure building or areas of the building, as required.
    • Communicate school rules to students. Maintain high standards for student conduct at home and away. Enforce discipline according to school policy and the due process rights of students.
    • Serve as a role model for student athletes. Exercise responsible leadership at all times. Demonstrate responsibility, fair play, citizenship, respect, and courtesy.
    • Maintain involvement with Athletic Boosters Association.
    • Participate in awards programs.
    • Develop rapport and maintain the confidence of staff, parents and students.
    • Promote sound public relations and interpersonal communication with a focus on the district’s educational mission. Act as a liaison to the public, community media, etc.
    • Participate in course work, workshops, seminars, etc., that support and enhance the athletic program.
    • Perform other duties, as directed.


    Physical and Mental Abilities Required:

    • Ability to lift, carry, or move equipment or supplies weighing up to fifty pounds.
    • Ability to travel freely between and throughout the district’s buildings and grounds.

    • Ability to set priorities, organize and complete tasks efficiently without supervision.
    • Ability to react productively to frequent interruptions and changing conditions.
    • Ability to communicate effectively using language and writing skills.
    • Ability to evaluate player and team deficiencies and prescribe corrective actions.
    • Ability to identify and express athletic program concerns and issues to district administrators and the public.
    • Ability to be punctual and maintain a good attendance record.
    • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
    • Ability to maintain a tactful disposition in dealing with administrators, staff, students, parents, and the public.


    Supervisory Responsibility:

    • Under the direction of the Principal and Athletics Director: work in cooperation with other athletic staff to provide instructions and communicate expectations to managers, assistants, trainers, support staff and volunteers.


    Working Conditions:

    • Occasional operation of a vehicle.
    • Frequent exposure to seasonable temperature extremes.
    • Frequent exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue.
    • Frequent exposure to student commotion.
    • Occasional interaction with agitated or upset parents/public.
    • Occasional interaction with disruptive or unruly children.
    • Work cooperatively with others.
    • Work under stress to meet schedules and deadlines.
    • Duties may require occasional work during the evening and/or weekend.
