What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substitute HVAC Mechanic position at KISD?
To coordinate installation of new equipment and provide daily emergency and preventive maintenance service pertaining to air-conditioning and heating.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Graduate or hold a GED Certificate or have experience in the field of work.
- Must have 5 years experience in air-conditioning, refrigeration and heating. HVAC Certificate and license.
- Be able to accurately diagnose and repair malfunctions in all makes and types of air conditioning systems up to 600 tons in size, to include centrifugal, reciprocation direct expansion units and screw chillers, as well as water towers.
- Have expertise in electric, electronic and pneumatic controls, electric strip heaters, all sizes and makes of pumps, as well as air handlers, unit ventilators etc.
- Have an acceptable driving record to standards developed by the Department of public Safety and the Education Agency (10 point system).
MINIMUM EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
- High School Graduate or hold a GED Certificate or have experience in the field of work.
- Have HVAC Certificate and license.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Have 5 years experience in air conditioning, refrigeration and heating.
- Have a Texas Air Conditioning and Refrigeration License.
- Have or be able to acquire a type 3 EPA Certificate for Freon recovery.
- Ability to supervise.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in air conditioning and heating.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- To service and repair or calibrate and maintain all temperature controls and related equipment.
- Keep an inventory of assigned tools and supplies.
- To maintain safety standards when operating equipment.
- To work cooperatively with other departments in maintaining school properties.
- To requisition and order, in the proper manner, necessary supplies and materials.
- Coordinate with Energy Manager.
- Develop and maintain computer program on operation of mechanical systems of each campus as required.
- Will supervise and train employees assigned to the department.
- To perform other duties and functions assigned by supervisor.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Uses power tools, hand tools, trencher, roto-rooter, air tools, step ladders, jack hammers, shovel.

Physical Demands:
Strenuous walking, standing, and/or climbing; heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, some stooping, bending, kneeling.
Environment:
Work outside and inside; exposure to hot and cold temperatures; exposure to dust. Toxic chemicals, and materials; slippery or uneven walking surfaces; work on ladders.
