General Position Summary
The Court Security Officer is responsible for patrolling and providing safety, security, and crime prevention services in and around the courthouse. This position ensures the safety of court staff, the judiciary, and the general public through proactive measures and law enforcement support.
Essential Functions
- Maintain courthouse security by controlling building access and operating electronic screening equipment (walk-through and handheld metal detectors)
- Inspect and search individuals and items entering the facility in accordance with legal and court protocols
- Patrol courthouse hallways and courtrooms, ensuring visibility to deter unlawful activity
- Conduct security checks for weapons, suspicious items, or devices within the facility
- Process offenders per court orders using the JMS system, including fingerprinting, photographing, and paperwork
- Search individuals taken into custody, secure personal property, apply restraints, and conduct holding cell checks
- Respond promptly to emergencies including disturbances, medical incidents, fires, and mechanical failures
- Execute lawful court orders including removal, detention, and arrest of individuals as directed by the court
- Write detailed incident and activity reports as needed
- Maintain and demonstrate proficiency with security-related equipment
- Provide public assistance, including directions and general inquiries
- Escort court personnel and jury members when necessary
- Serve under the Sheriff as a special deputy and follow directives from superior officers and court officials
- Maintain firearm qualification per Sheriff’s Office policy

Qualifications
Education, Certification, & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- No serious misdemeanor or felony criminal history; acceptable driving record
- Prior law enforcement or security experience preferred
- Valid driver’s license required
- Current First Aid/CPR certification required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Read and interpret safety rules, procedural manuals, and documents
- Write incident reports and general correspondence
- Communicate clearly with the public and court personnel
- Perform basic math including fractions, percentages, and graphs
- Apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions
- Handle standard problems and make sound decisions under pressure
- Basic knowledge of Internet and security-related software systems
- Regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, and use hands
- Occasionally required to sit, reach, climb, stoop, or kneel
- Must be able to lift/move up to 10 lbs regularly and up to 50 lbs occasionally
