Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Histology Technician to join our pathology team in Akron, OH. The ideal candidate will perform standard and specialized laboratory procedures in the preparation of tissue, biological materials, and body fluids for microscopic examination by staff pathologists.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
- High School Diploma with at least 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting,
- OR
- Associate of Science (AS) Degree with at least 1 year of experience in a Histology laboratory setting
- Registry certification or eligibility at the technician level preferredExperience & Training:
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a Histology Technologist preferred
- Must complete 12 continuing education credits annually to maintain employment
Skills & Competencies:
- Ability to read, comprehend, and follow detailed laboratory procedures and instructions
- Excellent manual dexterity for precision dissection, microtomy, and slide preparation
- Proficient in or able to learn laboratory computer systems and applications
- Sensitivity to diverse populations and ability to maintain patient dignity and respect
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and communication abilities
Physical Requirements:
- Medium physical demand: Ability to exert 20–50 lbs of force occasionally, 10–25 lbs frequently, and minimal force constantly to move objects
Essential Responsibilities:
- Receive and manage tissue, biological material, and body fluids for processing
- Label and prepare specimens using appropriate dehydration, fixation, and infiltration methods
- Embed specimens in paraffin blocks, section tissue using a microtome, and prepare slides
- Perform routine and special stains, and prepare solutions per procedural standards
- Maintain lab safety, cleanliness, and proper documentation (slide files, tissue blocks, and logs)
- Conduct equipment maintenance and manage supply inventory requests
- Provide limited technical information or direct inquiries to appropriate personnel
- Participate in professional development through training, seminars, and literature reviews
- Assist with the onboarding and training of new lab personnel
